Vinyl dye question

I bought some Vinyl spray paint at Menards and all it does is leave a coat of the color on the plastic I'm painting. It chips off real easy. Glad I tested it first since I want to dye my faceplates to match my case.

Does vinyl dye actually dye the plastic or is it just a coating too. I'm concerned that a coating would just wear out over time and maybe even cause issues with my CDRW if it flakes off.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks,
Pigseye

I have used vinyl dye on my bezels and drives as well, and it does seem kinda cheesy at first. But if you apply it in several thin coats and let it fully cure, (at least 24 hrs.) you won't have any problems. Just make sure you follow the directions and do the proper prep work involved. I used it on my entire CDROM tray and it has yet to scratch or flake, about a years worth of use.

I haven't had any problems with it. I did a Zip bezel and a couple of other bezels, as well as the handle on my chieftec case so it wasn't that blueish purple anymore :)

Vinyl dye works great but make sure you prep the plastic like the directions say. Usually they'll tell you to lightly rough up the surface with fine sandpaper or steel wool and them clean it up with isopropyl alcohol prior to painting. Spray several light coats and let it dry for the correct amount of time (usually about 15 miinutes) in between coats.

It's great stuff to work with and gives stupendous results if done right.

OK, dumb question. Is vinyl dye a liquid you paint on or is it like what I bought in a spray can.

Next dumb question. where did you get it? Target or walmart some store like that?

thanks again,

It's a spray, intended for use on car interiors - I've seen it in the automotive section of Wal-Mart, or any auto parts store like Kragen should have it.

Vinyl dye pentetrates the plastic, unlike paint. Once you use several thin coats and let it cure overnight, you'll find even scratches won't show through.
