Hopefully they can right the ship because more competition in the EV space is a good thing but initial reviews are not very encouraging.

For some reason, I thought scathing reviews of first customer deliveries came over 2 months ago; but the press junket must have just happened. Hilariously somehow one of the few bright spots was ADAS, when almost everything else sounds bad or worse!

VinFast will be irrelevant to competition in BEVs within a decade. Even if we generously assumed that they will right the ship, it's highly unlikely that they will become an established carmaker in the West. They are an unknown outside of Vietnam, and we know from previous cycles of imports of foreign makes that it usually takes decades to successfully gain a foothold in the U.S. VinFast is a very young company and it's hard to see how they could spend the billions it would take to compete in the U.S. and Europe.

I think competition in BEVs will take care of itself as long as supplies of batteries adequately grows. Every major automaker already has numerous new models in the pipeline, and obviously an ASP of $60k for a BEV isn't going to scale to the masses. What would really help make BEVs cheaper sooner would be the major Chinese automakers (Polestar notwithstanding) entering the U.S. market, but it's unclear to me when this will happen. We know they've aspired to do this for a while, but the regulatory and political headwinds have held strong. They already have a toehold in Europe, so there's no reason they can't sell in the U.S. as well. And unlike VinFast, they have deep enough pockets to play the long game.

Sounds pretty bad. Hopefully this doesn't destroy them and they learn from it. Maybe fix the issues before disappointing more customers.

They briefly had a market cap bigger than Ford and GM yesterday after their debut on Nasdaq. Took a 20% haircut today—which is “normal”—but I’m not ruling out a pump and dump here. NC bet big on getting their US factory and I really, really hope this isn’t the next Fox-con.
