Viking Longboat Cruise

I hear ads for Viking longboat river cruises on NPR. I just looked around, and it looks like a stupid old cruise. An idea I've had for awhile is to operate a real hand made longboat, and the passengers have to row themselves until it can get under sail, and maybe not then if the wind sucks.

Do you think people would pay for that kind of experience? You could do day tours, or even extended trips with camping. It wouldn't be for everyone, but I bet it would be a profitable business for the more active crowd. If any of you takes the idea, I want to be on the first ride; gratis of course :^D

That would be cool. Row the boat down the river, sight seeing, if you're hungry, stop and have a meal, sing songs, tell stories. I've gone on some river rafting trips along the Snake River, it's a blast.

They already exist. There's a company that makes 34 foot 'Montreal ' canoes with bracing and stepped for a mast and square sail. They hold 16 crew. I've put in a number of summers 'viking ' the south shore of lake Superior.

Two questions:
1. Do I get to dress like a viking?
2. Do I get to plunder booty?

If so, where do I sign up?

Thought this thread was about you wanting a Viking funeral, where the longboat bearing you was towed out to sea and set on fire.

I'd do the Rhine River Cruises in Europe; the scenery for viewing and photo purposes would be gorgeous.

Do you know how I know you know nothing about how sailboats work?

Sounds like you're a pro. How do square rigged sails work when you're docked in protected waters? Does the boat just take off like a Porche? where does this magical air come from, unicorn farts?

They're not just cruises, they're river cruises. It's like a bus tour but on a boat, and all the old stuff you'd want to see is on the waterways anyway. Of course there's not much Viking about them, except the branding.

It is powered by the souls of dead vikings. 😀 But we'll wait till our sailboat expert answers.

It was the term "longboat" that threw me off. I have a different definition of longboat than they do :^/

ive seen those ads, they are for long riverboats, not stuff u paddle yourself. it looks fun to me, id definitely do it if i had the time.
