Viewsonic VX2025 widescreen lcd with non widescreen resolutions

My Viewsonic VX2025 is great for widescreen resolutions, but some games just can't be made to run at widescreen resolutions, not even with hacks/config editing. The problem is, when I set it to a 4:3 resolution, it scales the image to take up the entire panel, which streches the image. I want it to show in the proper aspect ratio and show black bars on the sides.

I have an nvidia 7900gt, and there's an option in the nvidia drivers to use nvidia scaling instead of the monitors built in scaling. However, when I choose any option other than use monitor's built in scaling, the screen goes blank and it says 'out of range'. After 10 seconds, it reverts to the original setting.

I noticed earlier that I get the same 'out of range' error if I set the refresh rate above 60hz @ 1680x1050. Not sure if this is the same problem, because changing the scaling shouldn't affect the refresh rate.

Is there any other way I can get it to keep the proper aspect ratio for 4:3 resolutions? Any ideas on how to make the nvidia scaling work?

I'll know by Thurs. (the day my VX2025 comes :))

But the option in the Nvidia CP should work. AFAIK the Nvidia drivers should be able to handle the scaling. Is there an option in the monitor menu to disable it?

I haven't found an option in the monitor menu to change the scaling. The nvidia drivers do have an option to scale it, but I think the problem is with the monitor. Whatever the nvidia drivers are doing to scale it, the monitor can't display, so it just says 'out of range'.

It's not the drivers that is making the scaling not work, it is the monitor. I don't think the VX2025 scales like other ones. I personally have only scaled with a Dell 2005fpw. I also have the 2007WFP and the VX20205WM, but I haven't messed with it to that extent.

accordingto hardcop. its a problem with some of the 7x00 cards. and maybe even some ati cards.

a semi solution was to switch dvi ports on the back of your video card (if it comes with 2) . and try the setting again. You might also want to try the the 1:1 output option. (like no scalling. don't have the nvidia fp driver screen infront of me.

OP,

Have the same issue....and I haven't worried to much, since I'm always using WS resolutions...but I get the same "out of range" message.

Also, there won't be an option in the monitor's menu...unlike the Dell monitors, the VX2025 does not support scaling....it stretches the image no matter what (unless you use the videocard's scaling)....

If anyone has a fix though, that'd be awesome!

like i stated before, the biggest problem is on nvidia card in the 7800 ,7900 series.

according to hard cop. switch the dvi output u are using on the back of the card to the one most right.

and then try to play with the display driver settings. That should fix it most times

Switching DVI ports didn't help for me. Guess I'll just have to wait until nvidia fixes this in their drivers. Anyone have a link to the hardocp article? I couldn't find it on the site.

It is a driver problem, not the monitor. ATI on the rage3d forums came out and said its there drivers not supporting it at certain resolutions. Some random resolutions will have black bars

Interesting. I have an nvidia card, but i'll try it at other resolutions when I get home. As long as I get the right aspect ratio I wouldn't mind not having native resolution.

Well, at least they admitted to the problem. Are they intending to fix it? You don't have a link by any chance do you?

Yea, I have a Nvidia card too but I get the same problem. I thought that Viewsonic admitted to a problem in the monitor with the scaling?
