Viewsonic VP2770 or BenQ BL3200PT Monitor for average gaming and general use?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a 2K monitor that is capable of PWM Free (this is important for my eyes) with great color accuracy and picture quality - also used for average gaming. Been looking at the BenQ and Viewsonic monitor specifically.

I'm not sure if the BenQ BL3200PT is a great panel for average gaming (I play Battlefield 4, World of Warcraft, and hopefully GTA V). It uses VA, specifically AMVA by AU Optronics. I've heard it has great contrast ratios and no IPS glow. From what I've read, overall good performance with gaming and general use.

The Viewsonic uses a Superclear IPS Panel - with great color accuracy and picture quality. It's 27", smaller than the BenQ.

Not sure if the 32" will be too big for 2K, with less PPI than the 27" Viewsonic. The primary differences are the panel types, and sizes.

Wanted to get some input from you guys, thanks!

Will you be using the monitor alone, or with others? I like the BL3200PT because it's pixel size matches my existing 24" 1920x1200 displays, really nice size for native text and window elements.

I really love the large 32" size. But this guy Linus who does computer reviews etc. fully compliments the monitor for all the great features, and ends with how he feels it's just too big for him. I disagree, I love the size, but that's another perspective. He just likes tinier fonts, but I like the larger size.

Good question - I'll be using another 32" monitor for youtube/movies/ect. The Viewsonic/BenQ will primarily be used for gaming.

I was worried the text would be too small for a 32" but I'm glad to that you enjoy the size. Do you like the AMVA panel? Do you play any games with it?

Thanks for the link, it looks like he praises the monitor but it doesn't specifically suit him.

Dell U2713HM has no PWM.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2713hm.htm

"Interestingly the Dell U2713HM appears to not use PWM at all for dimming of the backlight. Even at 0% brightness there was no sign of the usual splitting of the white line that you'd expect to see in these tests. We carried out the checks at an even slower shutter speed which returned the same result. This is great news for those who are affected by flickering backlights and suffer from eye fatigue and eye strain. There are very few monitors which don't use PWM for backlight dimming although we have started to see a few more recently. The HP ZR2740w, DGM IPS-2701WPH and Samsung S27B970D springs to mind as others which do not use PWM."

I've used several 27" 1440p IPS monitors and personally I haven't found one that even comes close to the BL3200PT.

I did worry a little about pixel pitch on the BenQ, but in practice I've found 1440p more comfortable at 32" than 27". And the sheer size coupled with the AMVA panel's excellent contrast and black depth really gives a level of immersion for games that's seriously impressive.

It's an amazing monitor for general gaming, although its response speed is fairly typical for a VA panel so it isn't an optimal choice for twitchy FPS games.

Thanks for your input! Anything in particular you dislike about the BL3200PT? I've heard the AMVA panel has improved on ghosting, do you notice any for gaming?

I have the BL3200PT and absolutely love it. Been playing COD AW and now Far Cry4 and it has been great.

I have the BL3200PT too and absolutely love it too!

The PPI isn't amazing, but it's the same as a 24" 1080p monitor, so it's a massive step up from the 27" 1080p monitor I had before this one.

But the contrast ratios are out of this world (well, compared to the crap we have now compared to CRT/AMOLED... :p). The lack of contrast ratio was what was holding me back from actually spending some money in the end. Even if I spent upwards of £1000, I was still stuck with 1000:1. Now I only had to spend £450 and I got 2500:1.

The response times aren't the best, but I find them more than acceptable with overdrive in premium mode (I'm too lazy to get upset by the overshoot artifacts I only see sometimes when premium makes the motion blur over all better and helps the response times out a little).

I have read of some QC problems with the 3200, but my panel is almost perfect really. I'd really advise going for it! :)

I don't find ghosting to be a problem. It's there and you can see it if you look closely, but it's no more of an issue than with most VA or IPS screens. The Premium AMA (overdrive) setting is pretty good at reducing blur, at the expense of introducing some overshoot.

There's not much I don't like about the BL3200PT, really I can only think of two things; it's quite slow to wake up from sleep (5-6 seconds) and the programmable buttons on the OSD remote control can't be set up change the AMA setting so changing it entails clicking through the OSD (which is quite friendly as these things go, but it's still annoying).

Sounds like a very nice monitor and great contrast. It has no PWM (see report below.) Good viewing angles.

It might have more ghosting than other monitors you are considering. Input lag seems normal for a non-gaming specific monitor. Very through report below:

There have been quality control issues affecting a couple of batches of the BL3200PT (and other monitors based on the same panel) which understandably makes people unhappy, doubly so with such an expensive monitor.

But I've seen little other than positive reactions from the vast majority who got a fully working unit.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I received the BL3200PT, and I must say....WOW. The color accuracy in comparison to my 32" TN panel is drastically noticeable.

Very little (or not even noticeable) tearing/ghosting on Premium setting for gaming. Games look amazing! I feel like I enjoy playing games even more, if that makes sense? The speakers aren't too bad at all actually.

I'm waiting for the Viewsonic VP2770 to arrive today as well, and will let you guys know my thoughts on that.

I did not even know they made 32 inch TN panels

I can definitely relate now!

The Viewsonic IPS Panel looks sharper on the images/videos/gaming, although not by much from my eyes. For 2K Resolution and 27", the monitor real estate seems a bit small. Perhaps I would've considered a 32" IPS 2K monitor at the price range of $700.

I'm going to stick with the BL3200PT, as I find the tasks I perform to be enjoyable and easy on the eyes.

Thanks for the help guys!
