Viewsonic VA2012WB

Looking at the Spec sheet here

Manufacture Link

I would have to conclude that the monitor is a TN panel due to a
#1. Response time of 8ms (typ) not 8ms (gtg) (as viewsonic typically labels thier overdriven MVA)
#2. Viewing Angles are listed as 160/145. This usually indicated a TN panel type
#3. Brightness and contrast of 300/600 is not the right ratio to be anything but a TN or S-IPS panel. S-IPS are usually considered "expensive" so it seems unlikely they are used in primarly a discount monitor

xtnight has a good "LCD Buyer's Guide" thread in this forum that will tell you a little bit about TN panel types and how they compare to others.

Personally:
#1. The stand is pretty bad (tilt only). If you plan on adjusting your monitor even just a few times a week, a better stand is worth the money.
#2. I dislike integrated speakers since they as usually a waste of time
#3. Lack of inputs found on say the Gateway 21" widescreen (No HDCP, No S-video, etc)
#4. No USB hub

Overall, its a pretty fair price (as MSRP) for the monitor, but if your serious about getting a Widescreen, maybe a Dell 2005FW on sale at around 440 is a better bargin.

Aw crap. I was hoping TN wouldn't make it into the 20" arena.

It might be something else, for example a heavily overdriven IPS panel. Personally, the specs/price tell me TN.

I was unable to find the monitor's panel type in the usual places, potentially because this is a new model.

I really doubt you are wrong. The viewing angle and price gives it away. The easy way to tell is if you see the violet hue when viewing at an angle. I believe that is the easiest way to tell if it is an S-IPS.

Even with the slower Response time?

Dell 12ms

VS 8ms

A few points.

The Dell uses a form of overdrive, this will help grey to grey transitions. If you hunt around, you will find alot of people's opinion on the reactivity of this panel.

TN panels typically only score the 8ms on a black to white transition. Real responses will vary from 10 ms to 30ms (pretty good. A TV only displays a full frame every 32 seconds and a partial frame every 16ms).

12 to 8 seems like alot, but in reality, your probably looking at more 24 to 20 for average response time.

I recommend the Dell over that specific Viewsonic even for gaming because

#1. Better Viewing Angles
#2. Better Colors (8-bit as opposed to 6-bit)
#3. Better Stand (Tilt, Swivel, Pivot, Vertical...)
#4. Better connections (S-video, Composite and a USB hub)
#5. Fairly reliable Warranty/Customer Service

Negatives:
#1. 50 dollars more
#2. Will be slightly less reactive.
#3. Comes from Dell

I just think that the Dell has a better performance/cost ratio overall. If items 1-5 are not important to you, the Viewsonic could make a good monitor. At ~400 its at a pretty good price point for that monitor. ::shrug::

I think the Gateway is an even better Edit: Monitor. 8ms gtg (IE one of the best responsive panels), HDCP, Componet, Composite, Great Stand, Pip, Pbp, etc. But at ~600, performace to price is not the greatest.

Well I ordered a Dell 2005FW. It's not as good a price as they had a couple days ago, but the last day of the 25% discount.

Not that it will help your decision, but the actual warehouse has a $50 off coupon for this monitor, so the price would be $349.
