Wow i have to say, this thread wwas useful in providing me with information on 19" monitors. I am still stuck between the sony g400, viewsonic pf795 and the samsung 900nf. I don't like the kds avitron because it runs hot. As for samsung and the viewsonic they are both oh so tempting because they are actually in STOCK and cheaper than the sony g400.

But this is what i have conluded. So far, on average....the worst opnion of the sony g400 has just been too expensive. people complain about bad packaging, but that has nothing to do with the monitor itself. AS for the geometry problem, i think it's cuz alot of you are not used to the FD technology, although some of you do genuiley have geomtery problems

As for the viewsonic pf790/pf795. Recemtly i have heard good things about this monitor, but many of you have said the text is blurry or fuzzy at high res, like the 1600x1200.

Finally as for the Samsung 900nf, I have heard some rare serious problems with the monitor but i think you can expect that with all mojnitors, plus you have to consider shipping damages too but other than that, i tink the Samsung is a fine monitor.

In the end, i have to wonder why some monitors are so much cheaper...is it because they won't last as long as the Sony monitors in the long run? WEll only time can tell.

I've always seen good reviews of Samsung but every time I see one in a store it is turned OFF. Never could figure out how is one going to sell a product (especially a monitor) when it is turned OFF.
Sort of like those stores, (CompUSA) every time you go to try out a computer/laptop they have a password set to prevent you from trying out the computer without them standing right next to you.
I don't buy products that I can't try out.

i have a Veiwsonic P775 (17") and love it! my sister has a 15" mulitmedia monito and that is also running great. I have used a number of older 14 and 15" monitors also that have lasted the test of time.
i am not sure what the Pf790/795 are like but as long as they aren't short depth monitors they should be great. :)

Fuzzy text can will also depend on what video card you are using, if you can see if you can find out what video cards the display monitors are using when you look at them.

my vote is for viewsonic. :)

Ages back (a couple of years) i saw an ad which advertised that viewsonic (i think it was) sold more 19" and greater monitors more than any other company, can anyone confirm this.. I am pretty sure it was viewsonic, or maybe panasonic, i was suprised that it wasn't sony as everyone tends to love them. :)

All of them are flat monitors, good choices by you. G400 is without a doubt the best you can get, but you'd end up paying like $100 more than the other two. PF790, using the SonicTron is a solid monitor, I havent seen them but I assume it will be a good AG monitor. Im not a big fan of 3rd party xTron monitors, so I dont really like it. As for the Samsung it's a 3rd party xTron as well. I recommend Samsung SyncMaster 900IFT over that. You might want to add Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 91 to your list, it's DiamondTron NF, and it's cheap.

And that is the $64,000 question. Personally, after much trouble with both the PF790's and the Mitsubishi D'Plus 91's (all of which were mainly quality control issues, esp. burned out pixels, which Viewsonic & 'Mit "quality control" both allow, while Sony does not - call tech support to verify for yourself), the Sony G400 is worth the money and the wait (totally out of stock at Ingram Micro and most other distributors right now - TechData appears to have them though). Besides, I think a G400 for $486 delivered to my door was a great price and the Pointclick check arrived in less than 3 weeks.

MR:

Bad pixels are not allowed with Sony? Wow, I was unaware of that. I am, however, very familiar with the dead pixel policy of Mitsubishi and Viewsonic.

However, say you get a monitor with a burnt pixel (a Sony). How would you get it exchanged through the manufacturer? You wouldn't. They would attempt to "repair it" which, from what I've heard from here and Deja News newsgroup archives, makes it even worse than before.

Geometry problems with the G400? Don't all Flat CRTs have geometry problems?
I still love my G400. Costed me about $490 @ Onvia after Pointclick, shipped.

Well i have heard that the mitsubishi has fuzzy text at high res, like at 1280 and 1600.

Hmm on a side note...i am glad to hear that pointclick works. I am also worried that the sony will get damaged in shipping.
