Forget ViewSonic. The KDS kills it. If you want a DiamondTron NF tube, you want the Samsung, not the ViewSonic.

Ill tell you about a good deal for the KDS.

Mercata has the KDS for $499, if you sign up as a new member you get 20% for your first purchase, and according to this thread, you can get another 20% off through signing up as a new MSN Passport member, which prices the price down to about $320.

You cant go wrong with the AV-195TF, it has higher specs and lower price, I dont see any reasons to get the PF790 over it.

kds and samsung have arguebly the best warranty/service in the monitor biz.

actually, viewsonics warranty is pretty good too. :)

with those 2 choices, the kds av195tf is worth the ~30 price diff.

Some of my friends have actually complained about their Viewsonic PF790. Some say it's a little blurry at higher resolutions and it has an unusual problem of not remembering to resize itself when switching between resolutions. my friends have to constantly manually adjust their screen size when going back and forth between games and windows.

So i'd recommend the KDS AV195-TF in this case.

KDS' and Samsung's warranties are NO different than most other monitor mfgrs.! Read the details, there is nothing special about them at all.

PS. - I was likely the first to ever mention the PF790 on this Forum, over a year ago when MicroCenter first got them and was running the E*TRADE deal. My experiences were not good - 2 units with dead pixels. Still have a store credit due to MicroCenter's crap return policy. :|

If you have not personally went through their warranty/replacement program, how do you know there is nothing special? I thought you should know that better than me. People dont call KDS' warranty the best for nothing.

LXi: Like I said, read the details. Then compare them to any other companies' warranties. I have, and there is nothing majorly special about KDS' program, it's virtually the same as Viewsonic's, Samsung's, Iiyama's, etc. User pays for returns, refurbs may be substituted at manufacturer's discretion, etc. etc. As for the KDS Express Replacement, most companies have a similar feature. Now as for Sony, that's a different matter ... ;)

I own and am fond of the Viewsonic PF790. It's been trouble-free. A guy I work with bought one and his crapped out 6 months after he got it, but they replaced it with a new one overnight. You can't ask for more than that.

I'd still think you should personally go through the RMA once in order to make any conclusions. The KARES program is famous for a reason.

LXi: Actually utilizing a warranty isn't going to change the warranty details. It's not like they're not gonna re-write it or make special exceptions.
KARES Details ...
Warranty Details ...

Owner is responsible for return cost of monitor, and they can give you a refurb as replacement. Standard industry warranty. The only exception is during first 90 days, KDS pays return cost and will replace with a new unit. Many other companies offer the same. And the Express Replacement is no big deal, you have to give them your credit card to do this, and again, other companies offer equivalent programs. Not that KDS is bad/worse than anybody else, the fact is that they are all about the same when it comes to warranty claims. Iiyama does offer something a little different, but that's not what you're gonna wanna hear ... ;)

I'm using a KDS AV195TF right now....It's blurry in the corners.....not real bad, tolerable, but never the less it's blurry in the corners.

I don't know if they are all like this, although the KDS owners manual says this is normal due to the way the tube is adjusted at the factory and is an effect of the flat screen technology used...Text other than the corners is sharp and crisp, colors are good, handles high resolutions very well, haven't seen any moire problems at all.

I've seen many favorable posts about this monitor so I wanted to try it for myself. I'm going to return this one and try something different. If you can get in on the Mercata deal I would say that's a definte bargin.

Love my PF790.

I purchased from ValueAmerica .. and actually made $34 on the deal:D

Besides getting it for free.... I have been very happy with it!
I would recommend it to anyone.

You might want to compare both of your choices... side by side.

mine neither... good geometry too... the only monitors to come close are whatever FD trinitron or Diamondtron or Flatron based... too obvious? hehe
