don't know about the Dell, the Viewsonic has been a very solid performer for me. And personally I think a big fat chunk of what is badged Sony is overrated, at least for the money.

I have the PF 790 and a couple Dells, 21" P1110 and a 17"

My son got the P 991 and I set it up here for him. Colour and features wise I prefer the 790(I bought this new while the 991 was used) as the colours seem richer & deeper. I do prefer the 991 controls though, more choices and the basic ones are easier to access.

Its a close call, if they're both the same price I'd take the 790 based on my experience.

I had a similar debate myself only Hitachi Super Scan Elite 751 vs the P911 (sony 400 trinitron).

I choose the Hitachi tube. It's slightly curved sure, but that's about the only minus that I saw. I am used to curved monitors anyway.

Eventually I will upgrade to a flat panel once the timing/speed and prices fall to the point a 24" panel makes sense.

Veiwsonic all the way. I've had dell monitor's and they have all been sony tubes, I think the PF790 is a shadow mask monitor and shadow mask has ALWAYS been much better looking than normal CRT's for me, easier on the eye's for sure. I'm not totally sure though, but I've used a PF790 in highschool and it was very nice.

I've been impressed with the Dell 991's. There's one in the cube next to me.

I work in the IT department of a large Architecture company and we have bought a variety of monitors over the years. Everything from cheap CTX, Viewsonic, professional Intergraph's (yes back when they made computers), Dell, etc. Overall the best quality seems to be the Dell monitors.

We have Dell's at work and they are great. I have the PF790 at home and have been VERY happy with it. The PF has the flast tube and it is an Aperature Grill with the usual thin lines but I never notice them. Also have never had one regret buying the Viewsonic and would do it again in a haeartbeat.
