I'm about to get a Viewsonic E790 19" monitor. Any advice or experiences, pro or con? A friend is considering the 17" flat EF70, but I want the size and will sacrifice a flat tube for it. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the E790 monitor by Viewsonic, however, I've been using a Viewsonic G790 19" monitor for the past 16 months and its has performed excellently. It's never given me a moments trouble and looks great.

I got one of these a few months back, it's an ok monitor for the price. I like to run 19" monitors at 1280x1024x32 with a refresh rate of 85Hz if possible, on this one I ran it at that rate with a Creative Labs TNT card and there was a noticeable ghosting of letters and vertical lines. There was a faint repetition of these images a little to the right of the original image, also text was fuzzy in different areas of the screen at this resolution. At lower resolutions it was ok and colors were pretty good.

I would only recommend this monitor if you were to run it at lower than 1280X1024x32 and if you get a really good price on it. I sold this to a friend and got a Samsung SyncMaster 950p instead from Onvia (I got both of them from Onvia with $25 off and free shipping). The Samsung is much better, I've been running it for months at 1280x1024x32 at 85Hz with no problems. I'm not sure if they still sell this model anymore though.

Today I just helped a friend set up a 17" ViewSonic E771, and for the price, it looks very good. I think you can't go wrong with a ViewSonic and I also like to run them at 800x600 so that things aren't too small. Flat screens look kind of concave to me, so go with the "almost flat" E790 if you're getting a good price.

I use a 21" PT810 ViewSonic at work for high-end GIS and like it so much that I bought a cheapy 17" E771 for home use. I think the 19" E790 will serve you well, the specs look good for the money.

Thanks a lot people, especially Laszlo for the review link. Sounds good, I'm convinced, I'll pick up an E790 hopefully this weekend! Once set up, I'll post on how it looks.

I got it installed. It sure is better than the old 17" Magnavox Magnascan/17 with .31 and 15.76" viewable. The E790 is a bit of a "fish bowl", but not too bad at all. You get what you pay for and I'm quite happy with this purchase. The image is BIG and has great colour. With my ATI All-in-Wonder 128 16 MB AGP card, I now have a nice TV too. Thanks again for your input.
