My buddy is looking at the Viewsonic 22" Widescreen VX2235WM monitor. He doesn't want it in "hamburger mode", the stock mode but wants it turned so that it is taller than wide. Can this be done to ANY monitor. Is it strictly software related, such as, will he need some specific piece of software to change the recognized mode within Windows so that it sees it as vertical so that the text and everything aligns properly, or is it hardware monitor specific whether or not you can turn a monitor into a hotdog rather than hamburger mode?

*** for example, I know the Dell 2004/2005 models can pivot and turn to vertical mode. Can ANY monitor do that (software specific) or is it a hardware limitation. Such as my friend is planning on mounting this vertically to his wall for long PDF e-books.

no reason why any monitor shouldn't work as far as i'm aware...with XP or Vista at least.

i don't really get your analogy tho, if possible a hotdog is longer and thinner, and spends a similar amount of time in the vertical position to a hamburger...;)

You could always say you want portrait instead of landscape...

AFAIK the only hardware limitation is a base that supports rotation. If he's mounting it on the wall without a base, then he should be fine with any monitor he likes. Software will handle the rotation.

In fact, the drivers for the usual graphics engines handle this natively - no need for extra software, even though some pivoting monitors still come with one.

Depending on the graphics engine, some things won't be accelerated in rotated modes - video overlay, even 3D might be on this list, so check what the purpose is.

Okay, so it seems like it IS NOT hardware related, only software related. Which brings me to my next question. That specific model he is looking at has speakers. He wants two of them with the speakers (technically on the bottom of the monitor when on stock stand) should both face outward.

sooo.. does the software have the capability of recognizing or configuring clockwise and counter-clockwise portrait move?

Yes, you should be able to choose 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, 270 degrees.
