Viewing other computers on NT network from Win98 computer. Help!

I recently hooked up a Windows 98 computer to my NT network. I am the Domain Admin and have one domain of about 30 computers. From this Win 98 computer, I can see all the computers in the domain, but can only access the hard drives on about 1/3 of them. I have checked the individual computers and the shares and permissions seem to be the same. I can logon to any computer in the domain as administrator. The local drives are shared as both C$ and C Drive. The permissions for the C Drive is full control for administrators. Why can't I see a majority of the hard drives? Any help is appreciated.

No error messages. When I click on the computer, it goes to an explorer window but shows nothing. On some computers it may show a printer. I have double and triple checked the shares and permissions to make sure two computers are set the same. One I can see the drives and contents, the other, nothing. It must be some other setting other than the shares and permissions for the drive partitions. I check the user settings and made sure they had the same entries. I am not an NT expert, but it does not make sense to me.

I assume that there's a consistent pattern - if a particular computer can sometimes be viewed and sometimes not, then it would likely be a network issue. The only time I've ever encountered what you're seeing is with NTFS partitions on which I've set drive/directory local security settings, removing Administrator Group and limiting access to only my own adminstrative account. But, then, when anyone (including another member of the administrator group) tries to get access, either at the computer or over the network, there'd be a screen message saying that access is denied because of lack of permission. So, lack of a message means that's not your problem. I can't think, offhand, of anything else. If I think of anything, I'll post it. When you get it solved, post what it was. Interesting problem!

So your using the win98 computer to view the windows nt computers.

Or well, trying to is a better word.

Windows 98 and earlier versions use FAT - File Allocation Table. Win95 uses FAT16, and Win98 uses FAT32.
Windows NT and 2000 use NTFS with the exception of 2000, which can be installed on a FAT partition.

The problem here is, NTFS is backwards compatible in that it will recognize and read FAT partitions, but as far as FAT is concerned, its the only table that exists.

What this means is, you can connect and login to a NT server with win95 and 98, you just can't view the HD contents.

Hope that helps

My C drive is FAT 16. My Windows 98 is on my D drive which I think is FAT 32. I realize the incompatabilities with FAT 32 and NTFS, which all the NT drives are. This still doesn't answer the question as to why I can see some of the NT computers and drives, and not others.

Another possiblity is the setting that limits a machine's network access to a certain number at any one time. If lots of machines are connecting at their logons, the limit could be reached quite quickly.

No, when I connected, it was at "slow" times of the day. I thought it might a setting under User Rights in User Manager, but the administrator is is all of them. I mean the setting like Logon to this computer from the network, or something like that. NT is on my work computers.
