viewing LCD vertically

hi,

i'm thinking about viewing my monitor vertically with an Eizo S2100 (haven't bought this yet). if the monitor allows for easy mounting, would the main problem be whether my graphics card supports it? or can do this w/ a downloadable software/driver?

i tried to google this, but it's extremely hard, as there seems to be a common problem w/ lcds, where vertical lines show up as a defect. also, i am not talking about mounting 2 monitors, one on top of another. i am trying to turn the monitor 90 degrees, so that i view at say 1200x1600 instead of 1600x1200

I've run quite a number of LCDs in portrait mode, including two in front of me right now.

Any el cheapo or higher ATi/nV card will allow you to rotate the display whichever way you want as long as you use the correct drivers.

Even the majority of Intel onboard graphics will allow rotation.

And there are a number of different tools to do it if your drivers won't; irote is free & my preferred one for use on those systems w/o the feature built into the drivers.

Again though, it's unlikely you'll need that tool unless you have an extreme poor graphics solution.

As for vertical lines, it shouldn't be a major issue, vsync might help if it's noticeable.

Back a couple years ago, when i was running XP & an nVidia card or two, none of their drivers worked in portrait mode without a horrible tearing/lag when used in portrait mode.
(Not noticeable to most people, but it was noticeable when using pulldown menus or scrolling vertically - especially in forums like this).

This doesn't happen in Vista, & it's been so long since i used an nV card in XP that i don't know if that is still an issue or not.

I used ATi only because of that at that time to get around the issues with nV drivers.
