Vietnamese restaurants- what's with the numbers?

Yes, those are the names of the restaurants. The "Pho X" thing is pretty common in their names, and I've been pondering this question for like two years. I believe these numbers hold the key to all dumb questions posted here. :D

There's one (I think it's a Vietnamese restaurant) on Park Street in Madison named "I'm Here". A very odd name - makes me laugh every time I drive by it for some reason. I must be easily amused. ;)

I'm not complaining, man, I'm asking a question. I have to know. What do the numbers mean? What's Pho? C'mon, this is important.

Pho is just Vietnamese for Beef Noodle Soup I think. Not sure about the numbers, maybe it means something personal for the owners..??.

The numbers represent luck. When you see Pho 99, or a market with 99, its good luck. Will hardly find a Pho 13, 49, or 94 -- bad luck numbers.

Its not just for Vietnamese places, but it tends to be the case.

GO find a Pho 69 and order the house special :D

Seriously though, it doesn't mean anything. Just keep this in mind, NEVER ask to see the kitchen...

What you don't know won't hurt you

You sure? I've never seen a Korean, Chinese, Japanese, or Thai place with the number thing, but in Fairfax, VA, where you can't take two steps without tripping over a Vietnamese place, half of them do this number deal.

I'm very unsatisfied with the "Beef Noodle Soup plus a random lucky number" answer, but if that's it, that's it.

Why not just go into the restaurant and ask the owner? :) Now you got me wondering too.

Fine you made us do it

See you have to take the integral of the pho XX number, from A->B, a being the first number street to the east of the place, B being the first numbered street to the west

Then, using your result, you multiply it by the owner's mother's brother's son's brother's cousin's son's birthday in the AA/BB/CC format

you take (a*squared)(b*squared*) = (c*squared)(Integral)

Take the result of THAT, and divide it by 7, and round to the nearest integer

That is how you get the number

That's too easy.:) I'm trying to tap into the fountain of information that ATOT is, and rather than ruminate over the existence of God, re-hash the gun control debate, or mourn the loss of Dave Thomas, I thought I would actually bring up something important and useful.

So you're saying it's not random? Now we're getting somewhere.

Wait what happened to Dave Thomas? The Wendy's guy????

As for the number, I used to think it was a chain thing. But I haven't seen any PHO #1, #2, etc. Sorry if this answer doesn't satisfy you but I don't think it has any one single meaning. An owner of PHO 59 might choose 59 because he was born in 1959.

Yes, the Wendy's guy-it's been posted about six times today. As for the numbers, I'd buy the year thing, but not the chain answer. I'm going to have to do some more research to nail down some of the variables in Neuro's formula, and then see if it works.
