Vietnam War... topic for class paper

I need to write an 8-10 page paper on a topic for my "Vietnam War" class. The topic has to be something related to the war itself. I tried to do something like "Why We Were There" but I spoke to the professor and he said that said topic was a bit broad and try to be more specific.

I've thought of the Tet Offensive but i dont think i can write 8-10 pages on it.

Any ideas?

The Power of Local Insurgency....
How a sub 20th Century Military Power without Air Supremacy defeated the greatest Military Power of the 20th Century.
OR...
Winning their Hearts and Minds
The Power of Bicycles and Committed Soldiers versus Tanks, Helicopters and an army of conscripts.

Maybe you can draw a parallel with Vietnam and the current war in Iraq.

Perhaps touch on the impact the war had on the countless children it left orphaned. For example, I believe last year they had some media coverage regarding the "baby drop" operations where attempts were made (toward the end of the war) to rescue the many, many children in the orphanages.

you could cover one battle, like from the book "We Were Soldiers Once...and Young "

http://www.lzxray.com/guyer_set2.htm

This story, then, is our testament, and our tribute to 234 young Americans who died beside us during four days in Landing Zone X-Ray and Landing Zone Albany in the Valley of Death, 1965. That is more Americans than were killed in any regiment, north or south, at the Battle of Gettysburg, and far more than were killed in combat in the entire Persian Gulf War. Seventy more of our comrades died in the Ia Drang in desperate skirmishes before and after the big battles at X-Ray and Albany. All the names, 305 of them, are engraved on the third panel to the right of the apex, Panel 3-East, of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and on our hearts. This is also the story of the suffering of families whose lives were forever shattered by the death of a father, a son, a husband, a brother in that Valley.

Given that today's socio-political climate is FAR more conservative than back then, That the soldiers today are ALL volunteers, that there are far fewer broadcasts of dead bodies, either foreign or domestic ito the living rooms at dinner time, we were "defending" a Democracy rather than installing one, I would say that the parallels are fewer than one would think. Furthermore, bringing a topic such as Iraq into a Class where the focus is Viet Nam would only serve to show that the author doesn't understand the point of the assignment. Subject is The Viet Nam War, Not The Iraq War.
Might get a lower grade than one might think.

About the only similarities between the Vietnam war and the Iraq war is that they are commonly referred to as 'wars.'

People that say Iraq is turning into another Vietnam just want ammo to use against the President.

You could write on the things that led to US involvement, maybe about the French involvement in Indochina, and how it paved the way for American intervention.

Maybe write about how Vietnam affected the Johnson administration? How he couldn't focus on domestic issues like he wanted and how it destroyed his chances for reelection.

While Bush is enjoined from running again due to the Constitution, the similarities between Johnson and Bush begin here as this issue (The "boondoggle" that is The Iraq "War") may serve as a springboard for another shift in power in the U.S.
Given that he was going to spend that "political capital" on Social Security reform instead of defending his actions regarding the Iraq War and "The War on Terrorism", he has been distracted from domestic issues and is becoming more and more a "Lame Duck" as had Johnson, inspite of being eligible.

I wrote a long paper for one of my history classes about the history and the effect of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (i.e. "The Wall") on the American public's memory of the war.

If you want to read it, PM me.

Talk about something they don't normally talk about, like the atrocities the Viet Cong did against their fellow vietnamese.
or
How winning hearts and minds doesn't work, how the Viet Cong way of winning through terror and intimidation did. How the Americans would come into the village trying to be nice and helpful, and then leave. And then the Viet Cong would come into the village at night and execute anyone who was too friendly with the Americans.

Pick up a book called "Phase Line Green" by Nicholas Warr (kind of a ironic name for a Marine)

It's a first person account of the Marine's battle for Hue city during the 1968 Tet offensive.

(Though depending on how soon your paper is due, this may be too late to use in THIS assignment. Still a book WELL worth reading!)

I beg to differ.

hwo bout the role the republic of korea marines played in the vietnam role because they get no recognition in that war. most ppl don't know koreans were in that war helping the US

If you really want to do something important involving the Vietnam War, write about PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I did a 80 page paper on this topic, interview ex-vets, doctors, specialists, and other people. You learn so much more than just the war itself, what war involves, what soldiers go through, and how they live life after war.
