ok so my problem started when i tried to watch an .avi file in windows vista x64. The sound would not play and it said it had some kind of problem with my sound realtek something? Then i started not being able to play some movies and it would search for an extension and find nothing. I have been able to play these formats in the past and should not have had to try to install any codecs in the first place. The problem seemed to start when i upgraded to SP1.

When i first had the problem happen to me i tried booting into linux and running the files there and they worked fine. (good thing because i had to watch a few films for class). So recently it seemed as though the probelm was getting worse in windows so i went back to linux and none of my videos will work there. (mpeg, avi, etc.)

Im not really sure what my problem could be, and if it is SP1 how can it effect llinux.

I get alot of my videos via torrent so im thinking i might have gotten a virus or something from there.

If you think you might know a solution please help me out!

try reinstalling the realtek sound drivers, and maybe grab a codec pack and install it too if the realtek sound driver reinstall doesnt fix it. im thinking you may have broke the codec / corrupted it perhaps, or you may be trying to playback .avi's with different codecs (remember .avi is just the wrapper) so the codec pack should help.

try one of these codec packs or the vista codec pack:

1. reinstall sound drivers

2. download cccp "insurgent", run it, and use it to clean out all the codecs you have

3. download cccp, and use media player classic (MPC) to play whatever you want. I think CCCP has extensions for windows media player as well, if you insist
