a few days ago media player classic 6.4.8.5 stopped working, giving an error of "Failed to create teh filter graph object."

so i tried windows media player--which i dont normally use, and it's error is "The specified module cannot be found."

the only thing that can open files successfully seems to be virtualdub, but i think that's cuz it handles videos differently (vfw?).

ive got xp codec pack installed cuz it seems to be pretty comprehensive and free of spyware, etc.. so i uninstalled that and manually deleted the folder it left behind with a dll and the media player classic exe, then i rebooted and installed the newer version of the codec pack and received the same messages.

the two test files ive been using are a DV-Type 2 file from my camera and a divx file that i encoded from another DV from a while ago.

it seems to only be a decoder problem, because i was still able to encode the test DV file into a divx without problems using virtualdub.

any ideas?

Codec packs in general are not a good idea. Especially "comprehensive ones". You're usually a lot better off to install VLC and then manually install any additional codecs as you need them.
Unfortunately it also sounds like your codec pack is not doing a clean un-install (also typical of them).
You best bet would be to un-install the codec pack again and try installing VLC Player and trying to play a video. See if it can.
But in all honesty your system may be slightly crippled by all the codecs until you reinstall Windows next time.

I know you want to continue to use wmp, but VLC would be the better option as a trouble shoot.
