local stores are blockbuster and hollywood video. $5.99 for 5 days. and with games costing $50, i'm not going to gamble a purchase without trying it first. i'd be happy with $2.99 for 3 days. dvd's are usually $2.99 for 5 days.

I would rather just have 1 day rentals like they used to. If I rent a game for 5 days, chances are I'm not going to buy it afterwards... even if I liked it.

Its $6!!! Come on. You're saving a lot of money not gambling with getting a bad game. Give blockbuster the $6 :)

Of course DVDs are cheaper to rent than games, they are cheaper and you usually don't get as much "enjoyment" out of them. :)

$2.99? Lucky bastard. $4.60-something today (tax included) for "The Bourne Identity".

Hell, they're even cheaper when you just steal them from EB.

I figure $6.50 is good enough to preview the game, especially when I get to keep it like 8 days.

Of course, when I rent a really good game I wasn't sure I'd like (Tenchu 3), then that means I have to buy it :). I'm waiting for that one to come down in price or go on sale :D

so anyone use any of these sites?

one issue is that there's going to be 7 day turn around (a fourth of month) for another game (you mailing to them, them mailing new game to you), but that can't be helped, and not as big a deal if you go with more than 1 game at a time plan

also game selection, and how long the wait is on popular new releases

but my main concern is loss and damage since they all rely on usps. i've had items take extra 2 weeks to ship through them.

Hey, BB used to cost like 4.50 for 3 days. Now you get 5.5.

If you had a bunch of $50 games, what would you charge some guy off the street to borrow one for a few days?

i doubt it's costing them $50. one of the reasons blockbuster came to be as successful as they are is that they made deals with studios to share profits of rentals. with deal, studios shipped tons of vhs/dvd to blockbuster with perspective that it was material cost only (pressing dvd, shipping, packaging), which is small portion of retail price. other stores were getting them at whole sale value. with this, other stores had hard time competing with selection and volume of blockbuster.

even if these places get them at whole sale, it's not the $50 you or i would pay. someone here working at best buy or circuit city could probably share that info with us. i believe it's around $35-$40

but still, my main problem is that 5 day structure. i'd rather pay less for fewer days. but i guess they'd make less that way.

I used GameFly for a while. I had no problems and thought their service was very good. The only reason I stopped using them was because I didn't have enough time to play the games I rented.
