Does anyone else feel like there should be a forum just for discussion of displays? I'm interested in displays but rarely read threads about videocards

...any chance we can get these two separated?

I support this idea.

Having the discussion of displays limited to a single 300-page topic is kind of dumb. Could make it a subforum or something, if not its own forum outright.

So for a largely technology-related site, you would rather people who want to talk about displays stay in a single ludicrously long and difficult to search thread?

I've tried starting display discussion threads before and it always simply ends with "post this in the LCD thread." If I had wanted to do that, I would've done so in the first place; unfortunately because there are at least a dozen "conversations" running in that thread it's impossible to stay on track. Imagine a single thread for discussing anything related to ATI or nVIDIA.

Then they should allow LCD questions to get their own thread in that forum or in general hardware. I see no reason to have a separate displays subforum. I think we have enough subforums for hardware.

Well, I wouldn't mind doing it that way, except whenever I've tried, it's been met with "go to the 300-page thread." I've essentially resorted to going to hardforum for display discussions, although I think it would be nice to have something for LCDs here.

Do you still have a "14.1" WXGA Glossy Display (1280x768)" as listed in your profile?

I have a feeling you're going to be looking to upgrade that soon... wouldn't it be so much easier for you to read about your next potential monitor if they're separated from all the threads about specific graphics cards and general industry news about ATI/Nvidia. Even the once helpful "LCD thread" is so large now and has so many different discussions going on that you basically have to use quotes anytime you respond to someone. The whole thing is hardly even useful anymore past the first few pages. The only reason you seem to be opposed to this is because it would lengthen the list of subforums you have to glaze over and potentially slow you down in finding what you want. That's basically how I feel presently when I enter the "videocards and grahics" subforum; "oh great...let me sift through all these nvidia/ati wars"...

Ideally, you'd have as many subforums as "reasonably necessary". The ability for all users to hide or show particular subforums dependent on their preferences would be a super practical solution in this situation. Graphics cards and displays may be dependent on each other to work in conjunction but that doesn't qualify them as a single area of interest.

It's a notebook. I also have a Samsung 2243swx 22" 1920x1200 external monitor to use while I'm at home.

I don't quite see the need for a Displays-specific subforum. I'm pretty indifferent to the whole thing. I see nothing wrong with turning the graphics forum to include display talk as well - allow for separate threads on LCDs instead of the giant one.

Graphics Cards and Displays should not be bunched together.

The LCD/Monitor thread gets more posts than many subforums do, and is relevant to any user who uses a monitor. (did you know we have a Distributed Computing subforum? Yeah, it had 3 updated threads today.)

Yes, I would rather there be a subforum than just one thread for LCDs. It is very hard to follow one thread and overwhelming. There are simply too many different topics to discuss. For instance there could be an "IPS Panels" sticky and "Recommended Panels" sticky and then threads about new LCDs like the U2410. But it is probably my fault that all the LCD posts got into one thread in the first place. 😛

I would also rather it be more collaborative than me answering every question individually. I would love to have the time to do this and I often do, but sometimes it is not practical. I've tried to miss less than 5% of the questions over the course of nearly four years, and many of those 5% were duplicates or FAQs. A subforum would probably encourage more outside participation which would be great.

I like the HardForum setup: http://hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=78

Yes, I visit the hardforum display section quite a bit...that was what I was hoping to see here as well! 🙂

heh

"displays" has its own tab @ anandtech.com, but we can't even get it a SUBforum here? booo

No extra forums please.

Lock the display mega thread (it was good but it has 7500 posts!!) and allow people to post more display threads, it might cut down on the video card bickering as well.
