I'm trying to transferring my home video from VHS & 8mm to the DVD through the PC. My new camcorder has Passthrough (Analog to Digital). I have a older VCR with Mono In/Out and my 8mm Camcorder is Mono Out. If I transfer the videos from these devices I only get sound from one speaker (Mono). Can I split the audio with a Y cable from the Mono out? Also, if I've got a couple VHS that have been created in Stereo will I lose much quality?

Thanks,
-JC

Sure, but it'll just be the same audio track in both speakers. Most encoding software should be able to do this for you, and most playback software will do this for you as well if it detects a mono source.

Depends. If the VCR actually mixes down the two channels (which I find unlikely; if they were not cutting every corner possible, it would have stereo out), you'll lose stereo separation but have all the audio. If it just discards one of the channels, you'll lose any audio on that channel. If this is a video you recorded on a camcorder, you probably won't notice a difference (many record in mono anyway).

Thanks!

I'm using Pinnacle 9.1x. Do you know if this can do that?

I am pretty sure it can (m -> s). Also, get the update. S9 is now to 9.4 something. Lots of bug fixes.

I am using the same software and have transferred all of my video from a HI8 camcorder that only has mono recording. When I play a DVD burned from the video I get sound playing out both speakers. I didn't do anything special.
