I'm trying to rig up something to do some basic video surveillance. What I don't know is how to set it up so that the computer only records at a certain time, say 5 - 7 am. I'm planning on using a computer and a USB webcam to do this. What software can I use to do this? If I need specialized apps are they readily available (read: free)?
Any suggestions are appreciated:)

I'm sure it's out of your price range, but you could check out the DCS-1000. it's an ethernet based surveillence camera that comes w/ software. I think they can be had for around $150, but that's no longer free. :)
On the plus side though, you can monitor them from anywhere in the world over the net. just use port forwarding and a router.

This isn't even for security. We're just wondering who puts up all the politcal articles by the coffee maker at work. I plan on spending $0 on this. Worse comes to worse I have a tiny composite video camera and a VCR. Using the computer just seems to make much more sense.

AH!:D Thanks much. That looks perfect!

Dang. Free version only lets you capture 30 minutes at a time. Maybe I can just setup intervals or something. I'll look into it tomorrow.

or shareware. you don't need it to last for too long. I'm sure you'll land some porn site's webcam if you put "free" in your string.
