Video Settings Pause in Windows XP?

Whenever I change any of my video settings in Windows XP I get a huge 10-20 second pause between clicking OK/Apply and my change actually being applied. Then the Video Setting window(s) stick around for another 10-15 seconds even though they should have disappeared already. Occasionally the window will never disappear but can be painted over by wiping another window across it.

Bleh!

Just wondering if anyone's had similar problems. I have a GF4 ti4200 with the latest nVidia drivers and DirectX.

My registry just getting too big perhaps?
