I was wondering why video cards have never had 96MB of video RAM.... like why didn't the GF4 line go 4200 - 64MB RAM, 4400 - 96MB RAM, 4600 - 128MB RAM

Because RAM chips don't come in odd sizes. You use one set of RAM chips to cover your graphics chip's bus width. Now if you want to make that bigger, you'd have to use the next bigger RAM chips - which will be twice or even four times as large. That's why.
