Video problems? weird freezing? Do I need to edit the registry? HELP!

Hi,

I really need help here, this is driving me crazy!

My computer has recently started to act up. Upon booting into Windows, the screen freezes with a nasty splotch in the upper half, as if a window was opened and shut, and nothing can be done anymore, except cold restart. Next to the Start button I have a rectangle (as if an application is running, and it's called "VGA Probe&quot😉

Now, I have all the reasons to think this has to do with the fact that I changed from an old ATI Rage card to ASUS v7100 and then to v7700 within two weeks. Something must be screwed up with the video.

I tried to reverse to VGA and re-installed the video card. It still freezes. I also noticed some sort of "latency" in displaying the icons on the desktop: if Windows boots successfully, all the items have the same dumb "generic Windows" icon, then change back into whatever they were (Netscape, Word etc.) Also, there's a latency, when opening folders, in displaying the contents.

Upon un-installing SmartDoctor (one of the card's feature), I got a message:

Unable to unregister a self registering file 'C:\WINDOWS\ANVMI.VXD'.
Unable to unregister a self registering file 'C:\WINDOWS\IDLEHLT.VXD'.

This seems to confirm that something must be going bananas in the video...

So what do I do? Do I have to clean the registry? How do I do that?

What am I supposed to do?

yeah, that'd be your registry being retarded.
what OS are you running?
did you install/uninstall anything else BEFORE these problems happened?

Win98 first edition...

Alas, I installed and uninstalled A LOT of things... including video editing programs and monitor calibration.

I downloaded and installed a registry cleaner, it found 160 entries. After cleaning them all and rebooting, the machine seems to be working... but the same thing happened yesterday, after I tried to re-install the card & drivers... it opened and closed Windows perfectly, and then tonigh, BAM! here it froze again.

Other than cleaning the registry (which I hopefully did), what else can I do?

Unfortunately, when you install and remove a whole gruntch of programs, drivers, and the like each leaves its own little artifacts and foibles. I would suggest you back up your data and do a format and clean reinstall.

I can't... I need to back-up 20 GB of audio and video files first!

Since the application that seemed most likely to create the mess was SmartDoctor, I uninstalled it. And since I was really curios if that's where the glitch was, I re-installed it. Guess what, I ran it and the machine froze with the same symptoms.

So I think I'll leave the damned thing (SmartDoctor) off my HD, until I'll be able to do a complete re-format and make everything squeaky-clean...
