I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a potential problem I've come across.

I have three systems:

Abit KT7R w/AMD TB800@800, 256MB CAS2 SDRAM, and a Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (GeForce2 MX w/32MB AGP), Win98SE, VIA 4in1 v4.29, NVidia reference drivers 6.2.

IWill KK266 w/AMD TB1.2 "C" (266FSB), 256MB CAS2 SDRAM, MagicVideo 3DMX (Geforce2 MX w/32MB AGP), Win98SE, VIA 4in1 v4.30, NVidia reference drivers 6.5.

IWill KK266 w/AMD TB1.2 "C" (266FSB), 512MB CAS2 SDRAM, Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 (Kyro II w/64MB AGP) Win98SE VIA 4in1 v4.30, 7.114 drivers.

The problem is with WinTune 4.23. It says the GeForce2 MX in the TB800 is by a substantial margin faster than the Kyro II in the 1.2GHz TBird which is substantially faster again than the GeForce2 MX in the other 1.2GHz TBird. The TB800 and the Kyro-based 1.2GHz are side by side and I can see that the 1.2GHz finishes the tests first. This leads me to believe Wintune is in error. Is that likely? Why would it be so?

However, the news regarding the 1.2GHz TBird with the Magic Video GeForce2 MX is not so good. I can see that it is slower and not nearly as smooth. I know there are differences between implementations of the same chip, but we're talking a 2:1 performance gap between two 32MB GeForce2 MX cards. Surely the difference is not just in the card? I'm hoping I've missed something in the configuration. I disabled VSync which helps the numbers at least, but it seems something else is going on.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Paul Nixon

It looks like you are using different drivers for the 2 MX cards. Use the same drivers for both and then run your tests again.
