Video Problem - Exiting from 3D Applications

This is a problem with a new rig, after playing a 3D game or running a 3D screensaver, exiting back to XP puts monitor into standby mode, can't wake, have to reboot.
Rig: ASUS A7N8x Deluxe, 2500+, 512Meg(2 x 256), ASUS 9580 Video Suite (FX5600), XP Pro, Samsung Syncmaster 900IFT.

Latest BIOS, latest MB drivers, Directx, all installed. Latest Nvidia driver (44.03).

Runs perfectly stable, good temps, no crashes. If I disable Dirct 3D acceleration using DXDiag, everything is OK (but 3D apps don't run well). New 400w PSU.

What am I missing?
 
More info - when I try to run the Direct 3D test in dxdiag, I get the problem too, If I set the color depth to 16 bit, everything works except the direct3d test.
