What is a good windows media player and codec suite for viewing downloaded TV programs and movies on XP.

I am particularly interested in the cleanest and most minimal codec package that will have zero chance of causing conflicts with windows and other drivers or crashing my PC.

I was using the Core Media Player on my old PC - seemed decent. Where is a good codec package?
