Video Playback: Intel HD 4600 vs. AMD HD 7870?

Hello,

I've never owned a system with integrated graphics before, so please forgive the question if this a little noobish. I am soon to pick up a new i5-4670K w/ z87 to upgrade my system. I currently have a AMD HD 7870 gpu.

Will the HD 4600 have better/same video quality (over 1080p output) than the HD 7870?

Can I (and is there any reason to) hook up a second monitor to the motherboard video out?

I have a 1080p monitor and a 1080p projector hooked up to my compter, and I like to have video (usually NHL Gamecentre) going while playing games. At the moment, that doesn't work all that well as the GPU resources are shared and not sufficient to drive any high end game. I am hoping that by offloading the video playback to the integrated GPU it will allow me to do both. I am also curious if playback will be the same or better on the Intel GPU.

Thanks,

The Intel displays video quite well. Haswell fixes a few of the issues that IVB had. Anand just did a review on it.

You can plug another display into the on board graphics on most motherboards. But I have seen where some want the integrated disabled to use the discrete.

Try and tell us. Sometimes m/b bios's play nice and many options are open to the user.

I can play media to my TV, and play games like Grid2 at the same time with my setup. Does not seem to lose much. I use MPC (K-lite codecs pack)dxva where possible.
Sounds like a good plan to run the TV off the IGP , dedicated.

A 7870 should have plenty of power for simultaneous video watching and game playing. If the video you are watching is flash based try forcing it to run on the CPU by disabling hardware acceleration. I would not try this with your current CPU as it is likely is being maxed out by your card already. Disabling hardware acceleration would just hurt your performance.

Has Intel fixed the 24.97 fps problem with its CPU iGPU yet? If not that is still one of the major quality issues in their solution compared to a basic AMD/NVidia solution.

HD 4600 about GT440/GT630 level between HD 6570 and HD 6670.
HD 3000 = 12 EU (Execution Units)
HD 4000 = 16 EU
HD 4600 = 20 EU
