can it be done? I haven't work extensibly with VNC, so I am not sure.

what I plan on doing is, using a wired network (that is in my dorm at least, might be stuck with 54g, right now I am at least at my home as this computer has no wired access in my room), use VNC to connect to a Linux system (and a windows client on this computer I am typing from) and view video through the VNC client? The linux box in question will be a MythTV box, and I am curious if I can be able to view the live tv and pre-recorded shows through it. Mostly for live tv, as pre-recorder will all be transcoded to xvid (thats the plan at least) and shared out through samba (likely) to be burnt to dvd as seasons.

I haven't seen any VNC server/clients that actually works with video.

Only application that may be able to help you is maxivista (http://www.maxivista.com/). I was looking for a solution to extend my desktop screen to an old laptop I was not using and found this application. At that time there was a demo video on that site that showed two laptops side-by-side with one of them playing a DVD of Spiderman. The person used the mouse to move the movie from one laptop to the other without any visible flaws in the video. Then the came zoomed out and showed that the laptops were actually both clients to a desktop that was actually playing the movie.

Might be worth looking into if you are looking for a commercial solution.

hmm well i need something that will allow me to stream stuff from my linux box.
there is WinMyth which, if configured right will allow me to stream previously recorded files and live tv... but i will want something to let me stream mpeg4 files (xvid in particular) stored on the machine, instead of copying them all over first. most shows will not stay as the native recorded format so i dont know if WinMyth will be able to play my recorded files if they are not the native format, as i don't even know how myth itself will handle them. i still gotta get the machine set up and stuff so i will know more later.
