Actually: the terminal velocity of a bullet shot strait up isn't very high.

lol that was sarcasm dixyCrat. what goes up has to come down..

Why are you being such a dick? You responded to me (like a dick), yet I was interested in your point of view and asked why you were saying what you were saying. There are a 150 posts in this thread, excuse me for giving you the time of day and trying to understand your perspective, asshole.

And maybe you ought to read the thread, too: All I said is that I think it would have been safer than taking the hip-fired shot - both are overkill/uncalled for; I was making a comparison statement, ass. The gun shouldn't have even been out of the holster.

I read that. in fact i responded saying the idea that a warning shot is less risky is fucking stupid. witch it is.

Are you trying to say that people don't die from bullets that were shot up into the air? Because they do. It's practically impossible to fire perfectly straight up. There's always a slight arc. When the bullet comes back the the ground, it's going almost as fast as it was when it left the gun.

IMHO I don't think those dogs were on the attack and needed to be shot. Looked to me like that animal control officer was being pretty stupid approaching 3 dangerous animals by himself with no protective gear.

That dog didn't deserve to die... but the situation dictated it had to. Really a shame, and it's really the fault of the owner first for allowing the dogs to run free, and second the fault of the animal control officers ineptitude.

Having said that regardless of people who defend pit-bulls.. this particular breed has shown time and time again the capability for deadly violence. That doesn't make the dog bad... it's an animal... it just makes it dangerous. And they really shouldn't be pets. There are plenty of other dog breeds who are far safer. There are plenty of Pit Bulls... the overwhelming majority that will never hurt a human being... but there are also a small minority that will ESPECIALLY when not cared for correctly. This is enough for me to not allow pet pit bulls in the same way you can't have a pet tiger.

True

trueThere's always a slight arc.

False. It leaves the gun at about 1.5k mph and hits the ground about 200mph going strait up. The angle of fall will determine how much of the kinetic energy is eaten up before it hits ground: you don't get distance without giving up speed; so even a slightly off-center bullet will lose most of its energy gaining height and then have only gravity to bring it back down.

Still, 200mph led weight to the head could kill ya.

Do you know how to recognize playful behavior in dogs? In all fairness, it's okay if you don't - but the authorities should. These dogs were playing and were not a threat. Like wirednuts said, if these dogs were intent on hurting someone, that guy's ass would have been meat long before the gun was fired.

So I've told you why it wasn't justified - can you tell me why it was?

Maybe it was playful behavior. Maybe it wasn't. You're still ignoring the fact that these are dangerous muscular dogs (say what you want, pits have their reputation for a reason), and shit like that can escalate quick. These aren't golden retrievers or labs we're talking about. A huge muscular dog can still do a lot of damage even if he thinks he's playing.

Also, as you can see from the video, a warning should would have - and DID - work... and it would have been far less risky (read: stupid).

Maybe. But fire that warning shot where? In the air? Bullets come down. In the ground? Bullets ricochet. There's a reason why in the real world warning shots aren't made. Because it's stupid.
