So if the other two ran away nice and quickly after the gun shot why didn't he just try firing a shot at the floor?

Because he needed to protect the animal control guy, and he couldn't have known that the dogs would have run away from the gunshot.
Some dogs will run at the sight of guns, others, you can shoot around and they won't even flinch.

Dogs getting shot isn't safe at my work place.

I think the video in the OP is pretty safe for any workplace that will allow you to watch stupid Internet videos. If there's no pornography, gore, or overt sexuality, it's usually SFW.

He could have tried, he watched for 20 seconds before firing, he could have taken an additional 2 seconds to fire at the floor before shooting one of them.

Because he had a clear shot and he felt a person's life was being threatened. In the time it would take to do a warning shot he may have lost the opportunity to stop the dog in time.

Anyways, person's life >> unruly dog's life. You don't risk a person's life because you might be able to save an overly aggressive dog.

There's something wrong with the person recording. Get a blunt object and beat the #$%^ out of the animal.

There's also something wrong with the guy that's just sitting there with a dog latched onto his arm. Use your other arm and punch the @#$% out of the dog's face. Gouge its eyes. Make it regret attacking you. Some people just have no idea how to intimidate a dog. Sheesh.

The Pitbull has locking jaws. As its adrenaline is high, the jaws will stay locked when he bits onto something. The owner was trying to calm him down so the pitbull would be able to open it's jaws, which is the only way a pitbull can open its jaws when they are locked.

Really? I'd imagine he can fire 2 shots in under a second...

I know how locking jaws work. That sounds like 100% bullshit. Jaws lock so they can hang on. Make it so the dog doesn't want to hang on. Use your other arm in ways that another dog or prey could not. :colbert:

Think about what you're saying and what is involved in what is involved in safely firing that shotgun.

Let's walk through both options the officer had, shooting the dog or shooting a warning shot then trying to shoot the dog. The officer already had his gun aimed at the closest/most aggressive dog in case he had to use it.

Case #1
1. Gun already aimed at dog, knows everyone else is clear
2. Pulls trigger
3. Dog is stopped
Elapsed time: split second

Case #2
1. Gun already aimed at dog, knows everyone else is clear
2. Turns aim away from dog
3. Needs to make sure that everyone else and the dogs are clear of the new spot he is firing and that it is not a dangerous place to shoot (shooting cement can allow things to ricochet and be dangerous to other people)
4. Pulls trigger
5. Checks to see if dogs react and back away
6. Reaims on dog
7. Checks to see if everyone is clear
8. Pulls trigger
9. Dog is stopped
Elapsed time: realistically, multiple seconds

In all those extra steps the dog could have gotten latched on to the animal control guy, at best injuring him and at worst killing him. The officer had a clear shot, he took it, and he ended the situation. It is better to end a dog's life in that situation than to risk the health and life of a person.

I dont see a problem with this. Great shot! He did what was right and might of saved that guys life. There was no way he could of done a warning shot and I am sorry but a pack of dogs going crazy like that dont really deserve one. I hope the owner gets something for this.

Except that his meaning was transfered, so whatever hegemonic force told you what proper grammar is did so without appeal to utility. Not have a rational basis for a rule makes that rule only as valid as people choose to construct it. I, therefore, reject your meaningless rules as there exists no good prima-facia reason not to.

Unless you are trolling for the lawlz: in which case utility found and I support your efforts.

I was standing by my car when he came darting at me...fight or flight response kicked in.

And most sheep are standing in the flock when the shep-herding dog starts his thing. He still chases because they run. It's the same reason they chase cars.

If I didn't know, I would want someone to tell me so I don't do it forever. Obviously, a lot of people have shitty teachers that don't tell them, or even do it themselves.

There is no hope.

Every agency I have every seen has a strict policy against warning shots, no matter the reason.

Our animal control guy is a sworn officer and carries like the rest of us. We have a bad problem with dog fighting and pits are far and away the most common breed used so he runs up with his fair share of pits with a bad attitude.

It's a shame, they are good dogs when raised right.

the nicest dog i know is a pitt. She is so loving and nice its amazing. She is very very protective of the kids (my daughter is the first baby she had seen. very protective of her). likes to sit and play with the kids .

to bad the dog is old now though. spends most of the day sleeping on the couch.

I don't know about this one. 3 dogs running loose of any kind are going to try and bite someone trying to corral them. That dog behaved just like any other dog. They should have called for a second animal control person to come and help. To just shoot the dog to me was kinda senseless, yes he was trying to bite someone, dogs get scared as well.

Would he had shot the dog if it was a poodle?
