Video not showing when playing .avi files. Only hear sound. Any ideas

My friend gave me a video to watch, and it is an .avi. When I open it in Windows Media Player, it says "connecting to codec server". Eventually, it says error downloading codec, and then all I hear is sound when it is playing. Any ideas what I need to do here to get the video to show?

It said the codec I needed was XVID. I went to xvid.org, and downloaded xvidcore-0.9.zip.

I would like to install it, but there is no .exe. I am stumped as to what I need to do to get this to work

Search for and download "ffdshow filter". It will cover all xvid/divx movies. For audio, get the ac3 filter as well.
