Video machine.. time to upgrade.

As you can see from my postcount, I used to be a very active member of these forums.. however I've been 'out' of the hardware side of things for at least a year now, and I'm in no way familiar with current peices..

We have a machine that is dedicated to video editing, with some Adobe Indesign work too.

Dual Monitors, Matrox G400 Dual head, Intel motherboard, P3-866, 512mb RAM and a few good hard drives.

What is the current motherboard of choice? We do use AMD as well but I think I'd like to keep the video machine as an Intel, with an Intel board.

Another problem we are having is running out of RAM, and this current board is maxed out.. We need at least a GB of RAM, if not 1.5GB.

Any recommendations on CPU and motherboard? To be run on either Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro.

No one?

We also have need to be able to have a Firewire card installed - do modern motherboards have this built-in?

I suggest an Intel P4 2.4C or better, an ASUS P4P800 (I think that's the model number, I don't have the same "mental database" with P4s), a good stack of dual-channel DDR400, and a Firewire card or bracket. Your current hard drive and even video card setup will be fine for the work you're stating - but if you must upgrade either, just increase size/speed of your storage (SATA perhaps?) and stick to Matrox for your video - a Parhelia, P650, or P750.

Thanks M4H - I shall look into those 😀

just quickly, if you dont mind - whats the general consensus on Serial ATA? Worth it or not? Massively overpriced or are the drives/technology accessible.?

If you placed into an Raid array it may be worth the performance. Only get the 10000rpm raptors though. NO 7200rpm SATA drives IMO....

I think HT as well as a good dual channel i875 mobo (which can address up to 2gb of DDR) will be great...Short of going to a dual cpu opteron setup in single cpu mode nothing is as good as INtel processors in multimedia, even the athlon64's still do not best this title. A lot of programs and what not are optimised for Intels.
