Video/IGP question *stumped*

Hello,

I've got a problem that is stumping me. I bought a Gigabyte motherboard from a man on Craigslist who pulled it out of a customers working HTPC. According to him, the motherboard was working except it had a defective LAN device. I bought it and planned to build a gaming PC, but before I spent a lot of money I just wanted to give it a test run first.

So I purchased a Celeron D processor for cheap on Ebay. I installed the CPU, RAM, PSU, and GPU and booted it up. Now the cpu fan turns, phase led is on, and it beeps, but no video. The screen is just blank and dead as a doorknob.

The video card is tested and known working. As is the RAM and monitor. My suspicion is that perhaps, since the previous owner had a HTPC, he also possibly used a cpu with an IGP. So I'm wondering, is there a chance that I'm getting no video because some IGP function is enabled and I'm using a Celeron D? I've cleared the CMOS so it's back to default.

Would installing another CPU help with this?

cpu will not fix this (unless the cpu is defective, but u should be getting bios beeps)


for the video check the following

memory. go down to on stick.
power, check the video card doesnt need extrapower and that the 12v power connector is connected so the cpu is getting power.

how did you reset the bios (pull battery or use jumper)

also get us the model of the motherboard.

Here's what I've done so far:

Installed CPU and HSF according to Gigabyte's instructions.

Connected 24-pin ATX connector, 4-pin ATX 12v, from known working PSU.

Installed known working RAM in each slot, one at a time.

Installed known working video card. I know it's getting adequate power.

The board will power on, turn fans, and phase leds are on, I hear the sound of cpu loading, just no display.

The board is a GA-EP45-UD3L. One thing I do notice is that when turned on, the "phase led" stays on red (indicating a full cpu load) and it will remain on red for approximately 20 seconds before the motherboard shuts down.

I've cleared the CMOS by both jumping and pulling the battery out.

Any ideas how I can get the video working and avoid RMA'ing the board?

Does the board have an integrated graphics output? Have you tried hooking into that instead of the video card?

No beeps from the motherboard speaker?

Good idea. Yeah, I double-checked the outputs, and it has all the standard USB/PCI outputs, plus it has something called "coaxial S/PDIF" and "optical S/PDIF". Are those used for video?

Beeps are normal.

Nah, I meant plugging in the monitor cable into the motherboard's VGA or DVI output instead of the dedicated video card's output.

S/PDIF is audio.

Besides the video card, there is no plug for vga or dvi.

Hmmm, this situation is starting to look bad.

The board is bad. He couldn't have used onboard graphics in the HTPC as the GA-EP45-UD3L does not have onboard video.

And socket 775 cpu's do NOT have integrated IGP's on them. Only the newer Intel 1156 and 1155 cpu's do.

He had to have used a video card in the HTPC.........so give it back

bad proc

bad pciexpress slot

you said it beeps. that is a error code. can you describe the beeps (long short, and how many)

So, thank you to everyone for the input. As of now, I did EVERYTHING in the guide and still, no video. So probably at this point, I have to incinerate it or sell for parts. Ah well, you win some you lose some, I guess.

Nevermind, there are Celeron D processors listed on the support page - assuming BIOS F2 is installed and it is still not on F1:

Hmm that's a good point, it's possible that the BIOS on the board is the F1 version. The gentleman I bought it from didn't give any indication about what BIOS he was using, all he said was that he used it for 4 or 5 days, saw the LAN was defective, then pulled it out.

I wonder, is there anyway to flash the BIOS without video? I'm guessing not lol.
