Video goes to 640 display with 6800GT

I've tried 3 different driver versions.

Sometimes if I open Windows Media player, or mozilla firefox, the display goes real big, and I have to sit an wait 5 minutes for it to reset to my 1280x1024 desktop.

Even with the most recent beta drivers for nvidia, happens

Anyone else run into this or cure it?

Have you used driver cleaner? it's worth a shot. Definitely don't use the Beta drivers if you are getting bugs

its a fresh os install
fresh driver install

Sounds to me like your monitor drivers aren't installed, I had that happen to me many times as XP did'nt put them in and I had to install them again.
