Video gaming = sport?

I had this argument with a buddy of mine (mainly just to argue with him) and I figured I could bring it to OT for some more opinions (and flames 😀)

Video games are competitive, require good hand eye coordination and quick decision making skills. This is all depending on the game of course. He kept bringing up the physical aspect of sports and how video games do not have that necessary part. I brought up the fact that there is DDR and a few other physically strenuous games out there.

I know this is a little far fetched but do you think video games could ever make it to main stream media and become a well recognized sport? Definitely not in the near future but as the number of geeks grow so do they're pastimes.

No, its a game. In my mind a sport requires physical activity. Sorry, moving your fingers is not physical activity, thats like saying writing is a physical.

So, could you remind me why POKER is on ESPN?

A parapalegic can play video games with no significant disadvantage.

Sports: Golf, Bowling
Games: Video Games, Chess, Poker

ESPN shows poker cause they like to branch out. They also show the national spelling bee and Mathcounts.

if they can put a spelling bee and poker on espn, i wouldn't doubt video games could make it one day.

however, it'll never be a sport in my mind.

Did I say I consider poker to be a sport?

Just because something is aired on ESPN doesn't make it a full-fledged sport. Doesn't the 'E' stand for 'Entertainment'?

Gaming isn't a sport, it doesn't require enough physical activity. It's just a game (an advanced game, requiring some honed skills), like poker. Poker is aired on ESPN for its entertainment value, not its sports value.

I don't really think Video Games will be considered a sport, though i wouldn't be too shocked if they ever were.

It'll probally hit Mainstream at some point since the industry is growing so large, and may even have the money invested other industry's do, but as for a mainstream sport? i think that's a stretch for now)

If it hits ESPN it'll have the same kind of 'sport' classification as spelling bees and pokers. Imressive, but not real sports.

So then DDR (dance dance revloution) could be a sport? It requires physical activity.

I can feel that. Competitive DDR? Judging doesn't seem any less valid than figure skating or gymnastics.

i think they show scrabble tournaments on there too. i love scrabble, but i would never call it a sport. DDR can be considered a sport, if things like dance and figure skating are considered sports.

In a loser-esque poser sort of way, yes.

I just use DDR as an example. We are still in early times for video gaming and who knows what crazy DDR style video games the future holds. I dont DDR myself but dont you think if your going to play a video game you might as well burn a sh!t load of calories doing it rather then sitting on your ass clicking away? 🙂

if we're talking about sports, i'd rather play an actual sport like basketball or volleyball. the physical activity in a real sport will almost always blow away dancing in front of your TV to japanese techno music, while stomping on a pad.

rule of thumb, if you can eat potato chips while playing, it's not a sport.

btw, we are NOT in the "early times for video gaming".

that would be like equating a game of monopoly or checkers as a sport.
not a sport and never will be, just because some idiot puts it on tv, doesn't make it a sport.

I guess in some ways it could be considered a sport.

There is agility and it is competition. to me the competition makes it a sport.

But then we'd have to call "co-ed naked knitting" a sport as well.

in my eyes it is not a sport. but then again, neither are half of the events in the olympics. then again, they are called the "olympic games", so even if video games are not considered a sport, maybe we'll see em in the olympics at some point?!?

Uh...anybody who says half the events in the olympics are not sports needs to put down the crack pipe. Which event in the olympics will a parapalegic not have a significant disadvantage in?

so you call skeet shooting and archery and curling sports?

i would consider those more along the lines of a game than a sport.

I was not talking about personal preference.

I would like to see you eat potato chips while trying to be really completive at any first person shooter or DDR type game.

How do you know how far we are in the future of gaming? I admit we have come along way since pong type games but I think were still in a relatively early stage.

Absolutely. As much of a sport as bowling and golf.
