Just heard it on cnn...

Who really cares?

MSNBC

?VIDEO GAME violence is now an epidemic, and violence against women has become a black mark on the entire industry,? David Walsh, head of the National Institute on Media and the Family, said in a statement announcing the report card. ?Rewarding players for having sex with, and killing, a prostitute is a frightening example to set.?
Now in its seventh year of report cards, the private, nonprofit institute graded the industry in several areas, and for the first time handed out an F as an overall grade.
?This failing grade,? Walsh said, ?is a wake-up call for everyone: manufacturers, retailers and parents.?
The industry is ?pushing the envelope ... beyond standards of decency,? said Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., who along with Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., hosted the institute?s press conference.

Wow, with the current state of the gaming industry, if they are getting an F right now as compared to Es, Ds, or Cs in the past, then I hope they get a Z next year! Why do we care what these half wits (as far as gaming is concerned) say?

So I guess it isn't just Republicans that are bible-thumping censorers who want to protect "decency". Screw them and the horse they rode in on, I'm seventeen now, I can watch all the R movies and M-rated games I want legally.

Hmmm, a lot of parents who don't like the thought of their eight year-olds playing shoot-em-up, hack-em-up, and slice-em-up games?

I understand some people would have zero problem with their eight year olds viewing hardcore gay porn or gratuitous violence, but a lot of other parent's have a brain.

We should care because the Non gaming community will get in an uproar to ban video games because they are too lazy to watch over their kids.

"Watchdog" groups with the word "family" somewhere in their names are hardly impartial, and often have a religious, right-wing agenda. Take what they have to say with a large grain of salt.

Amen to that :) So true, so true. Put the words "children" or "family" in an organization's name and you've got something that's hard to argue against, because hey, it's for the kids! It's amazing how easily manipulated people are...

I think parents should pay more attention to the ratings of the games they buy for their young children. As long as the game has a rating and the parent knows what the rating means I don't see what the problem is.

They have the marking on the box. What the hell more do these people want? Maybe we should put all the M-rated games in a small room at the video store right beside the porn-room. Stores should do the same, and have a guard at the door to check ID for everyone who goes in.

If parents are too lazy to supervise their kids then that's another problem, and frankly, I don't want to be penalized for their laziness.

Consider the following points:
- There's a market for violent video games
- Developping violent video games is legal
- Selling violent video games to people who are of age is legal
- People can make money off selling violent video games

Conclusion: people will produce and sell violent video games, no matter what these idiots say.

If they parents have a brain then why don't they use it? I give most parents an "F" for not caring enough to actually look at what their kids rent/buy/play. I don't know how many times at BlockBuster I'd get a 10yrd w/GTA or something and the parent would look shocked when I'd basically say their kid picked up a "rated R" videogame. All it takes is 3 minutes to look at/read the box of the game yer kid picked up to find out content and the rating. The info is out there (we had big freakin' billboards talking about game ratings and all "coming soon" signs for games had the rating next to the name just like the movies do), but many parents are too "busy" to take a few minutes to inform themselves about the games their kids spend hours and hours playing.

I remember when I was around 15/16-ish. There was a group headed by a certain former Vice First Lady, that group was known as the Parent's Music Resource Council (PMRC). To hear or read it from MTV, band/music oriented mags, bands themselves, and 'word of mouth', you would believe the PMRC to be a Fascist/Nazi organization who wanted to burn all books, experiment on babies, tattoo all teenagers and force them into labor camps for no other reason than to prevent them from having any fun, not because they particularly wanted the labor, and of course, to ban the production or sale of that "evil" Heavy Metal and Hard Rock 'devil music', which is what I listened to.

Ahhh, stupid, impetuous, and foolish youth! Ready and willing to swallow any sort of steaming crap they are fed.

It wouldn't be for years that I would learn all PMRC wanted was for there to be parental advisory labels on music, not to ban it, not to censor it, not to force bands to remove offensive lyrics from their music, not to eat babies and burn books. Just parental advisory warnings on the label of albums, nothing more.

The more things change, the more they stay the same....

They can give all the pisspoor ratings they want. The video game industry is enjoying strong sales industrywide, which says that they are creating product that people actually want not what the bible-thumpers think is appropriate.

Maybe parents need to start treating the ratings on the boxes of video games like the ratings for movies.

Then again, what parent is going to actually take an accountability for what their kid is doing/seeing/playing?

Video games are a multi-billion dollar industry. It helps fuel the economy. They're dumb if they think they can ban violent games. Those are the games that sell, and if store enforce the ratings and don't sell mature games to underagers there shouldn't be any problems.
