posted a while back in another section but no responses. basically i have some video footage on my samsung scd-27 camcorder that i would like to put on my computer. i thought there was a way to transfer the video from a dv tape to my pc using a usb cable but it hasn't worked and its frustrating the hell out of me. i would prefer not to have to buy a firewire card and cables at this point. im not concerned with quality, i just need the video.

sorry but I thought FW was needed for video and USB was for stills. you may have to make a minor purchase.

thats what i thought too, and its not like the cables and card are expensive (sets on newegg for around $10) but i saw my friend transfer video with usb from his camera so this is puzzling me...

I tried what you are doing, and it did not work. You'll need to do the transfer over firewire.

IIRC, my Sony camera lets me do it with a specific Sony software program, but it's a pain in the ass compared to firewire.

If your camera has pass-through, video capture through firewire is about the best supported option. There are some suites that come with some DV cameras that support a USB connection, but they do not work worth a damn.
