If you burn a dvd here in the US would they be able to watch it in Austria and switzerland?

it depends if it's regionless or not.
Usually it's regionless when you do that in your home. There's the option to select it and I leave it on "none" or blank.

Better : use handbrake to make an MKV, get a free dropbox acct, up it to there, give your euro buds the login, they can dl it, watch it or burn it.

oh right, I always forget about PAL NTSC etc.

Digital delivery would be the most economic solution anyway.

Make a torrent of it and send it to your friends, leave the computer on for a night and it's done.
