I am new to building my own system. Reading threads from this sight sends me in the direction of the ASUS P4T-E. I'm pretty set on this, as it seems to be a good stable system I can have fun tweaking. I'm staying Intel for my first go around. I can barely afford a 1.7GHZ processor. I'll have 256M RDram. I will do Autocad and Solidworks. I'm not a big gamer, but my 4 year old will be soon. What video card do you recommend for a guy on a budget? I'd like to get a video card for under $100.00 I have a ten year old Viewsonic monitor. Man, what a work horse! Will I need to upgrade the monitor also? HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Seems like the Geforce 3 ti200 is a pretty good deal stateside these days. I'm Canadian and the Geforce 3 is still way too expensive, so I put a Geforce 2 ti with 64 mb of DDR RAM. It works real well with my Asus P4T-E.

Whatever you do, be careful if you are going to buy an older video card. The P4T-E only accepts video cards that run at a certain voltage. All cards made in the last year and a half or so will be fine, but a Vodoo 3 or 5 should not be used.

You can find the particulars on Asus's site.

PLEASE, get a new monitor! Get a little Radeon LE (about $67) and get a NEW monitor. A ten year old monitor has done its job. ;) You can get a NICE Samsung 19" for a pretty good price now a days. Now if you can afford it, a GeForce 3 TI200 AND a new monitor would be idea. :)
