Here's a page from Anand's test of the 1.7GHz Celeron, which was run on an i845D chipset: link. The AthlonXP's in that test were running on the KT333 platform. The 1.40GHz AthlonXP is definitely outperforming the 1.70GHz Celeron there. Considering that an AthlonXP 1700+ now costs $49 (versus $53 for a 1.7GHz Celeron or $83 for a 2.0GHz Celeron), it looks like AthlonXP is going to be the better buy in the CPU department.

Motherboards are a separate story, of course. One of the most popular AMD boards is the EPoX 8RDA+, which is about $95. If you were looking for a value platform for the Celeron then probably an i845PE board like the EPoX EP-4PEAD would be a good pick, about $72. Both boards will let you upgrade to a faster CPU down the road.

If you're truly trying to cut costs, and happen to have some decent PC133 you want to re-use, consider the ECS K7S5A as well... it has slots for PC133 as well as DDR, and it's under $60. It will take 266MHz-based AthlonXP's but not the newer 333MHz-based ones (or not at proper speed, anyway). But PC133 will drop the performance up to 10% in some situations, versus PC2100 DDR, so keep that in mind.

thanks... the ekcs setup is what I have been looking at.... but right now I have a soyo dragon plus with an 1800xp chip.. but it won't POST. I know the DDR ram is OK and the system powers up but I've tried everything and so I might just go ahead and buy a chip in newegg... I'm thinking the 1800 chip I bought from someone here is broken because I took off the artic silver and it looked scratched :(

Heh... That was going to be an upgrade for my system (an old PIII), but I got trolled on that mobo/cpu purchase....

Thanks for the info though.

If your SOYO won't POST, one of the first things to try is holding down the Insert key while powering up. This overrides the Fan-Off Control so you can get into the BIOS and disable Fan-Off Control. If you want troubleshooting help, just holler :)

AMD = company
Celeron = product

kinda like saying should I get a Honda or a Camry

one is a car company, the other is a specific car

what do you want to know? AMD or Intel? or do you want to know Duron or Celeron? or is it Athlon or Celeron?

AMD Athlon XP = Nissan Altima V6
Intel Celeron = Hyundai Rio

Considering an Athlon XP 2000 goes for $57 USD, (and slower proccessors go for as low as $45) how can you go wrong with that kind of performance for that little money?

Not to sy that i'm not anxious in getting rid of my 2000 to spring for a Barton soon. But oh well :)

Celeron blows... it should just be a question of which athlon you want. If you were in the market for a P4 things might be different, but Athlons still offer more bang for the buck. I saw a 2200 for 83 at googlegear I think it was... I checked pricewatch and you can get a 2200xp for 71+shipping

Ah! Forgive me if this sounds really like a n00b but I thought that the celerons where based on P4 architecture?

The faster Celerons are based on P4 architecture, but they are still out-performed by Athlons. If you take a tire off of a Corvette, a Volkswagon will still out run it. The Celerons are too crippled to compete.
