MS Movie maker has come along way since version 1, and it's free 🙂

This would be a great place to create a list of these products accorrding to price and features.

MS Movie Maker = free
Final Cut = ?
and so on. I would love to know. Have a baby coming in March and want to edit movies with my jvc minidv.

Final Cut Pro rocks, but I don't have access to that mac anymore so I use premiere (which is acceptable).

As for the camcorder itself, I've had the Sony DCR-PC100 for 4ish years now.

What version of Premiere? Have you tried Vegas Video?

I really like my sharp. Sharp puts out some nice camcorders for the money. If you want good driver support for editing, look at Sonys. I hate to point anyone towards sony, but in my quest for software for my sharp, I found that pretty much everyone supported all different models of sonys

Vegas Video 4

It's the only program that automaticaly removes the 3:2 pulldown on our 24p footage (shot with Panasonic AG-DVX100's)

Also some powerful audio editing.

Panasonic AG-DVX100...it is the best Mini-DV camera on the market IMO, and I have sampled all the popular ones including Canon XL1S, and the Sony PD150 & VX1000. Also the only DV cam to shoot in 24p mode (looks film-like). MSRP is around $4,000, but IMO worth 2x that.

For a lower end (albeit better than a family cam), I like the Canon GL1. Mid range: Canon XL1s (but I hate the zoom), professional: I am partial to the DSR500.

For editing, I use Premiere 6 at home (PC) and Final Cut Pro for most work that I do.

I have a Sony TRV900 & I've been using Windows Movie Maker 2

I've been leaning towards buying Vegas, but still considering Premiere or Final Cut Pro.

I do a fair amount of underwater work so I'd like something that auto adjusts for lack of red in the spectrum if possible.
