A friend and I are thinking about making some home movies. We are thinking about taking it a step up and do some editing via computer. I'm very new to this area and would like some input on a good card/software for home users(not too expensive, we're high schoolers with low budgets). I would like to be able to take recordings form a 8mm camcorder and transfer it to the computer to edit the scenes and some voice over narration, then back onto a VHS tape. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good package for this?? Any advice would be very helpful!

thanx

well ... i'm now making some divx from friends tv show episodes ...
i get them from the VCR and then compress to Divx

is something like this you'd like to do ?
i just use a simple bt848 ( a bit old ) card and virtualdub ( free software ) for captuing/editing/compressing :)

that's fine ...

as i said ... i use virtualdub for everything ...
just to take the codecs

www.virtualdub.com

there you can get from those cams ( i really think you can, i just donk know how as i dont have one ) and record it ...
then edit for what you'd like it to become and output to a VCR or compress to dvx/mpeg/vcd ...

just get the soft

video capturix is also great ... but paid
