As much as I like what Boxx Technologies does it really does depending on what software and what client demographics you're going to be working with. It's very true, 90% of clients want Final Cut Pro projects which is Mac only. It's now the "Pro-Tools LE" of the video industry so if your box can't handle it..well the client will likely go elsewhere. If this is simply for yourself to dabble with home videos and such then it doesn't matter what platform you choose to use as they're all fast enough to handle the job and with more than enough software to do everything you need to do.

When your friend said the G5 performs great in video, (and assuming he's a professional) what he's talking about is the package as a whole. The G5 will handle Premiere, Final Cut, Avid etc. which are the 3 big kahunas. Cut out Final Cut Pro (no pun intended) and you're looking at a faster and cheaper Windows Boxx (NPI again).

So again it depends on what your goals are as an editor/producer. If you want to be able to professionally handle various projects, get the G5. It'll pay for itself even if it's slower at rendering but that's a process that's sort of a done deal..you hit render and that's it. You're gone until maybe the next day so who cares if the Boxx will finish rendering a few minutes faster.

Moving, cutting, deleting clips etc. around, in other words editing doesn't take up much power so your working environment is more important overall. Just have enough ram and you're set.

One of my clients handles some huge projects doing DVD work for some big names that I can't mention but she does everything on a Dual 533 G4 with about 2gigs of ram and the workflow is always smooth and the equipement that she has has already paid for itself and more.
