video editing, video for windows support, other questions (help me, NicColt)

I've got a story to tell, so please bear with me.

I built a Windows 2000 machine with the goal (among other non-gaming things) of being able to grab video from 8mm analog camcorder, edit the video, save and output to CD or back to the camcorder or to VHS VCR. It is really a hobby that my wife wants to pursue, so we're not necessarily looking for professional or studio quality output, but what I put together needs to be stable, as I hate it when things CRASH or don't work for her.

Hardware:

Tyan Tiger 100 * 2x P3-550 * 1GB PC100 SDRAM
2x 35GB IBM GXP on Promise RAID Card (70GB stripe)
SB Live Value

I originally purchased ATI AIW-128 Pro, but discovered that they did not have Win2k support (at that time). So, I shelved that card and moved to the Voodoo3 3500, which had, albit beta, drivers and software.

Well the Voodoo3 3500 has been a crash and burn story. The import works to save, but crashes regularly. I'm looking to go back to the ATI AIW-128 card that I still have, now that there are beta drivers/software available, but wanted to ask the folks here which card is better for the purpose identified above on Windows 2k platform.

Any other moderately priced <$300 stuff/suggestions that would make her life easier is certainly appreciated!

boggs, you have enough juice with that system and if I'm not mistaken the AIW-128 Pro does have a VfW WDM model in Win2K just get the drivers from rage3d.com I'd go for that first if you already have it. The AIW-128 has the same capture chip as the Radeon.

I'm starting to like the Hauppauge products.
also the matrox marvel line. but DV editing is a whole can of worms. you can go cheap or if money is not a problem you can go big. You just have to settle on what you want I guess.

I have a burner with 300 cdr's so I don't really care about the resolution or the amount of space I need, I just wanted to get a decent digital copy of my 8mm's before it's too late. I though I had the card but I think I'll need to go Haupppauge unless ATI fixes the Radeon real soon.

I am so happy you have been posting about your disturbing realization re: Radeon and no VFW support. I has all but decided to go get the Radeon AIW card and saw your post.

Using the AIW-128 card, what software would you recommend for stability/features to do the types of activities I described above?

Thanks again!!!

>all but decided to go get the Radeon AIW card and saw your post.

I like the radeon for games don't get me wrong, but if you truly NEED the VfW support, the AIW-Radeon is not the way to go.

Depending on how complex your captures are, if it's just plain play and capture, you can capture it directly to mpg with ATI's software just play with the bitrates and decide on the level of quality you want. If you want to do simple editing capture it with virtualDub and do some simple slicing or converting to another codec. If file size is your concern install Windows Medica Encoder 7 or the divx codec it has some very good compression with good quality. You can capture it with good avi quality edit it with virtualDub and then encode it with WME7. If you want to do some more professional editing maybe Adobe Premiere 6.

Everyone has their favorite and their own ways of doing things. But that's what I recommend for a simple in-expensive approach.
