1. I wish to hook to my HDTV for editing and viewing my own hidef videos and family pictures. I currently use Adobe Premiere Pro 2 and might move to CS3 once the bugs are worked out. It is important that this is a quiet system!
2. $2000 to $2500
3. US
4. Intel-Fanboy
5. All new parts
6. I have read many threads which has lead me to the system components listed below.
7. I may play around with over clocking but a stable system is more important to me.

I have spec'ed the system based on P5K and DDR2 but I am wondering if I should go with P5K3 and DDR3, which is more expensive and I don't know if it is worth the extra expense.

I would appreciate any feedback or recommendations before I order from Newegg. Will all these parts work together? I plan on hooking up the SATA drives normally to test out the speed with my editing and if necessary hook them up as a raid 0.

ASUS P5K DELUXE/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX

those parts should work fine, but for hd video work I would go with the q6600 over the e6850, I don't know if premiere pro is fully setup for quad's yet but a lot of video work (especialy encoding) works well with multithreading and will benefit from quad core vs dual. I would recomend bothering with ddr3 for this kind of work at this time, but you might want to consider going with 4 gigs of ram (even though vista/xp 32 wont see it) as some video work can benefit from more then 2gigs.

I agree with jkresh about a quad core vs a dual core. The quad core will get you a bit better Premiere performance. It also allows for better multitasking.

If I had your money to burn for a full bore video machine, I'd go with...
* Q6700 @ $545
* Zalman CNPS8700 @ $60 (I want down-blowing HS for Board Component Cooling also)
* GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R (DDR2 & DDR3) @ $160
* Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400 2GB Kit XMS2-6400 @ $85 (rebate would lower the price).
No need at all for PC2-8500.
* Raptor WD1500ADFD (OS & App drive) @ $185
* RE2 500GB WD5000YS x 2 (RAID 0) @ $315
* WD7500AAKS 750GB (Backup drive) @ $185
* MSI RX2600XT Diamond Plus @ $175
* SAMSUNG 20X SH-S203B (SATA) @ $40
* Antec Performance One P180 @ $120 (rebate would lower the price)
The 180 is your pick, I would use a different case. I'll submit to your own personal taste on this.
* PC Power & Cooling 750W Silencer @ $190
* ATI TV Wonder 650 @ $120
* X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion @ $175
Total = $2,355

There are rebates for various components that would drop the price more.
You could save some by swapping the Q6700 for a Q6600, the two RE2 HDs for two SE16's and shave a bit more off by going with a lower end sound card.
If you need firewire capture from a video camera, add $45 for a TI based 1394b card.

My personal case pick would be the Cooler Master Cosmos 1000.
It's one of the absolute best designed and best looking cases I've ever seen! :laugh:

Wow, thanks for the excellent feedback. Looks like I have yet more research to do based on these suggestions. In the meantime I have been reading even more threads, in particular about the RAID problem with the P5K, and am now leaning toward the ABIT IP35 Pro. Based on this I may substitute the following components:

ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor
Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
EDIMAX EW-7128G PCI Wireless Card

I'll also study the suggestions and consider other alternatives. Boy, the choices are endless, but I think in the end I'm going to end up with an amazing system for the price!

Oi, you want quiet, right? Hmz, then throwing a 10k rpm HD in your PC isn't really the way to go :p I'd see if the 7200.11's from seagate are out allready instead. The p180b is a nice quiet case though, but when spending that much money I would replace the antec tricool fans for yate loons, nexus or sflex casefans. I'd also buy a big HSF with a 120mm fan, like a thermalright extreme 120. Low rpm's will still cool the q6600 sufficiently. I would also see if you can get your hands on a Seasonic S12II 500w PSU, it's supposed to be VERY quiet, and has all the power you need. Why the 8800gts 640mb card btw? You're not gaming, are you, that's just more noise. Buy a nice passive cooled 2600xt instead which allows for HD playback and has all the ports you need and save some money too.

When overclocking I'd go for the gigabyte ds3r, the abit pro suffers from high vdroop, bad for overclocking a q6600. Which will run as stable as it can be at 3ghz by just bumping up the FSB to 333, and that's going to make a difference when encoding.

Thanks for the suggestions. The 8800gts 640mb or Quadro FX1500 is recommended for work with Premiere Pro 2 and CS3.

Yes it works, but it doesn't net you ANY performance gain WHATSOEVER. Hence it's not worth it. Rather buy 4gb of ddr2 800mhz. In fact, when not overclocking, ddr2 533mhz ram is all you really need. But most if not all p35 mobo's only support ddr2 667mhz or higher :p

Wow, since I really don't understand why 1066 does not give you a performance increase, I'll just have to defer to your judgement. Thanks. I'll go with the ddr2 800 and get 4 gb. I appreciate the advice!

cdavidyoung, its not that ddr1066 gives no performance benefit, its just that ram is not the bottleneck in most cases so the price/performance benefit of fast ram is not generally worth it (twice the price for maybe 3-5% improvement).

Hmz yeah sorry for not elaborating. It's just that a q6600 has an FSB of 266, or 1066 qaudpumped. DDR2 ram is doublepumped, so ddr2 533mhz will allready be enough for a 1066fsb CPU, to supply it with all the bandwith the CPU could possibly use. DDR2 1066mhz is double that, so it basicaly offers 100% bandwith that can't be used. Some people also want to run higher FSB's with lower multipliers, like 8*450 instead of 9*400, to maximize the benefit from faster memory, but it doesn't gain them any extra performance. Only in artificial benchmarks like sisandra's we see an improvement, but not in real world applications.

Think of it this way...
Tires "rated" for running 200MPH mounted on your AMC Pacer, won't make your car go any faster than it would with cheapie Walmart treads.
It's just a waste of $$ for the higher "rated" tires. :p

Well, I am happy to report that Newegg came through with all my parts last Friday and I was able to assemble my new computer in a matter of hours on Saturday. The only hassle I had was getting the video card set up for my HDTV. I spent quite a bit of time with the tech support at Nvidia before they were able to correct the overscan problem I was having. The edges of the desktop were outside the viewing area of my screen. It was just a matter of downloading a patch to their drivers.

I am extremely happy with all my choices. The whole system is very quiet and fast. I love the motherboard and especially its ability to control the fan speed. The RAM is really cool with all of its flickering LEDs. The case is very solid and well built. Things are a little tight with all of the cables, but I can?t imagine the case being much bigger. The CPU fan installed in a matter of a couple of minutes and did not require any other thermal paste because it came pre-pasted.

Even though I bought 2 matching 750 GB hard drives with the intention of hooking them up SCSI, I have not found it necessary for my purposes. I just hooked them up regular and they seem plenty fast for my video editing. The scrubbing could not be smoother.
I appreciate the feedback I got from this forum. It helped make this whole process a lot less scary and more enjoyable!

Did you mean "RAID" where you mention "SCSI"? :shocked:

Nice rig, such a shame you threw so much money away on a q6700 though :) Just for kicks, push up the FSB to 333 in the Bios, leave everything else at auto/stock settings. Now you've got yourself a 3.0ghz qaud, and you could have done the same with a q6600 :)

1. Your MB doesn't have any SCSI controller built in.
2. You don't have any SCSI controller card on your "final list of parts".
3. You don't have any SCSI HDs on your "final list of parts".
4. Do you know what "SCSI" means?

You are right. The last system I built had SCSI RAIDs and thus my confusion. These are SATA RAIDs I guess. Thanks for enlightening me!
