Video editing software

I'm in the market for some video editing software. What do you suggest. I think i can get a copy of Premier 6.5 from school for next to nothing... part of a class i'm in... but is there better programs or better options for a casual video editor?

I use Premiere 6 and I have a Matrox RT2000 card in my PC. It work fine and prety fast. But if u wanna got for video editing, u gotta know if it's for broadcast purpose, cause if it is, premiere ain't the proggie for that. Premiere is good and user friendly but it use is own codec to encode DV (transfore to AVI in my system) so u lose quality in the transfer. If u want clean pro work, it's Avid Xpress DV that u'll need. Been working with it for a month and i'm still crying for my mom!
So, for my home (getting drunk and do crazy stuff, friend's birthday) video, i'm using premiere. But when i'm in serious work (and i have plenty of time to look in the manual for How To), Avid i use.
If your premiere is free....why go and by other proggie for 500$ and up 🙂 And don't forget that u need a capture card to bring video in the PC and if u bring video files from school, get the same proogie at home.
 
Premiere should be the easiest and best software to start learning video editing. i know, cause im doing it right now.
also, give Avid a try.
