Video editing software

There hasn't been a thread (tried searching) for awhile about software since Windows Movie Maker was pulled from the store. I'm looking for something around or under $100 that is fairly easy to use, but a little more capable that WMM. Would like to take recorded sound clips from something like Audacity or similar and overlay them on video while splicing different camera angles or captures together. Also need light animations of graphics and text.

Is something like Adobe Premiere a good start or will I be completely overwhelmed?

Adobe Premiere has a considerable learning curve. Premiere Elements might be easier to master if you can live with the software limitation. OpenShot, Lightworks and Avidemux are all free and worth a look if they will do the job for you.
