What's the best software for editing video? I have a project for a class where we have to record a bunch of stuff and edit the video to make it look professional. What's the best software to use?

I have WinXp wtih the movie maker stuff.... Should I invest money in software or is there anything in the open source community I can look at? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-

id use pinnacle stuido 9, you can do transition effects, audio stuff and whole bunch of other stuff, but also pinnacle has studio 10 coming out soon, but if you go with studio 9, get studio 9 plus, has more features, and stuff.
 
well, the freeware I use now is Honestetch Video Editor 7.0
but it has no save fuction as I can find. only an "output (converts project to mpeg) or burn (burns to cd) so you have to get it all done or hope your computer doesn't crash overnight
