Video Editing Software?

What is considered the most professional video editing software out there?
Is it Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere or something else?

What do studios use?

there are two kinds of video editing software

editing = for cutting clips together
effects = for adding special effects to the video

Just from my experiance, Vegas Video for editing and then combustion for effects

Final Cut Pro is for writing scripts and Adobe Premiere is for video editing....Adobe FX (After Effect) for special effect editing.

Some say Vegas 5 is better than other better video editing software.

Studio where I worked use Matador 64 and Shake 2.0 but it only runs on Unix OS.

I use Liquid Edition 5.5. It is, by far, the most competant editing softare I've ever used. One of the really great feature of the software is its "insta-save" feature. This means that it saves your progress 30 times a second. I was at a demonstration down in LA and someone was editing and a guy pulled the plug out from the wall and everyone was like OMG! The brought the machine back and loaded up LE and be began right where he left off. It also has "background rendering", which essentially means it begins rendering effect, transitions, etc while you work. It only utilized CPU that is not being used, so there is never any slowdown of lag while you work. Alot of Premier users are jumping over to LE.

Its a great program. Have you ever edited before?

Vegas 5. I work with video for a living and trust me, vegas is good. Premiere is clunky and crashes a lot. Bleh

I use After Effects 6.5 for visual effects.

I use Vegas 5 for all my editing needs. Can be a little intimidating at first, but is really a great piece of software. If you are looking for a cheaper, slimmed down version, sony also makes movie studio, which has some tutorials and retails for around 99 bucks, if you are just getting started, go the 99 dollar route, it should satisfy your needs. Vegas isn't cheap..around 600 bucks.
